Thanks Shane and culbaire!  I might aws well be staring at Ancient Greek!  I'll get a map out and have a look at the area involved.  Nice sleuthing :)

The only townland in the parish of Davidstown that may fit in is Knockmore

Culbaire - genius!  Shane, thanks for the map!  Knockmore is so close to Moneytucker.   That is certainly the area where they hailed from.  :)

Hi.  I think I may have found Margaret McGrath's birth record index in the IGI and it names her birthplace as Carrigbyrne.  Google gives a number of different places in Wexford for Carrigbyrne... I wonder does anyone know exactly where it is?

Thanks, Clarissabell

I'm really puzzled about his family... there are IGI records for a John Freeman, the right age according to the Irish census, born in Clonroche, Wexford... but the father is Darby Freeman, mother Mary Darcy... but for Mary Freeman (John's sister perhaps), I have found two records... one says her father is Jeremiah, the other says it is Darby Freeman!  They have the exact same birh date: 03 Jan 1873.

Anyone got a clue what might be going on here??   Jeremiah and Darby seem quite unusual names for farm labourers  ???

Hi clarissabell,
Carrigbyrne is indeed on the N25 Wexford /New Ross road. It is in the parish of Newbawn church. As regards your ancestors named Darby & Jeremiah. Darby was in fact a common christian name about 150 years ago. It could also have been used as a nick name too. Therefore your ancestor may have been christined Jeremiah, but was probably known as Darby .
