Gorleston births 1743
« on: Tuesday 05 October 10 10:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for the birth of Robert Stanton and Miriam Riggs both born c1743 Gorleston. I have their settlement certificate in 1772 issued by Gorleston that gives their age as about 29years. I have been a long time trying to find their parents. As I live in Spain this is a bit difficult. Any help would be gratefully received.
Regards
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,
I have no info for you but are you aware that the family search org
has a lot of Norfolk parishes which are available to browse free on-line.
There is no index as such for each parish shown but you can view original
registers page-by-page. Go to this address and scroll to the bottom
where you will find Norfolk and/or marriages etc in Great Britain;
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=allCollections&r=1

Click on what ever you are after which opens up more sources.

I did a quick look for a Robert Stanton and whilst not in the year range you mention, did find several.

Thanks Alan, I appreciate your help.
I was aware of this terrific site and have found many missing family members on there. The only thing is that Gorleston is not included. My luck!!!

Gorleston was in Suffolk for many years until 1890 i believe. It's only moved over to Norfolk quite recently in family history terms. Lowestoft should have the records i believe, or maybe someone has the fiches themselves. :)

Thanks for the info. I shall have to wait til I get back to the Uk. My roots are near Lowestoft. Robert Stanton is my brickwall so I would love to find his parents

Presumably you have the marriage in St John Timberhill Norwich 26/2/1770 from familysearch.

Two possibles from Famsearch:- Robt Stanton 17/3/1744 Cantley, Buckenham, Norfolk (west of Norwich), parents Thos/Elizb.

There is also a Robert Stanton birth in Wrentham 16/4/1745 which looks possible also.  It seem likely that this Robert traces back to a Stanton family in Flixton late 1600's/early 1700's.  I have been trying to find our link to that family (Weybread branch/Flixton family) but I am missing a vital link.  I would be interested to see what other Stanton links you have in the area, particularly around the late 1700's.

The first is closer to Gorleston.  Occupation may be useful.

Hi RossT,
Yes I did see the marriage and have the original from The Norfolk records on Familysearch.
I have a "Settlement Cert." which states
We the guardians of the poor within the Hundred of Mutford and Lothingland do hereby certify that Robert Stanton and Miriam his wife aged each about 29 years, he being a bricklayer, to be an inhabitant and legally settled in the parish of Gorleston. Dated 31 March 1772.His son Robert born 1771 and his daughter Sarah born 1774, were both both in Norwich so I assume that hs birthplace was Gorleston and that he went to Norwich to work. I cannot find any birth for Robert or his wife Miriam Riggs. I know that in 1780 they were living in Yarmouth.
