Rootschatters using Puppy Linux
« on: Monday 04 October 10 21:27 BST (UK) »
For about a year I have been playing with Puppy Linux 4.2
I recently purchased Puppy Linux 5 on a CD
When I try to load It
It reads the Puppy al-right until It is about to start and then reverts to the cd Shell and tells me that the Job control is turned off.
In the hope that someone among the many chatters is also into Linux and understands what is going on
Can anyone assist me
I am not particularlly Au fai with Shells and such but Help!!

Hi Alf

Why not just download Puppy and install it on a USB stick instead? It'll boot faster and be a lot more convenient.

You might find an answer here...

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ubuntu-63/bin-sh-cant-access-tty%3B-job-control-turned-off-474493/page4.html

...but it's ugly.

What hardware are you running Puppy on? Would it support an install of XUbuntu instead? You could also look at Damn Small Linux or #CrunchBang... http://crunchbanglinux.org/

In my experience Puppy is best but I've never encountered the problem you mention.

Paul

If a Linux system goes into a command line shell then it usually indicates failure to load some device, usually your graphics card.

Depending on your flaver of Linux you can try typing either:

X
startX

That will try and start the Linux GUI (Grapahical User Interface) or Linux style Window interface where you can use point and click to navigate your way about.

When you go into a shell it is normally because your run level is set to single user mode or the Windows equivalent of Safe Mode and it means you do not have network support amongst other things.  Unless you are an expert you probably won't know how to fix whatever is causing the problem.  The important thing is to try and get an error message to find out what went wrong and you can try typing this at a commond prompt:

dmsg

More info about this here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmesg

To exit from a shell, type:

exit

To shutdown your system properly from a command line, type:

shutdown
