George Herbert Jones of Burley Village, Kirkstall
« on: Monday 04 October 10 09:29 BST (UK) »
What happened to George Herbert Jones,  born 5t July 1875 in Oswestry, Shropshire? In 1896 he married Maria Williams in Burnley, Lancashire and by 1901 was living in Burley Village, Kirkstall area of the West Riding of Yorkshire. He and his family were still there in 1911. George Herbert Jones followed the profession of iron and brass molder. George and Maria Jones had (at least) three children: Arthur Henry Jones, born Burnley, Lancs. in 1897, Joseph Edwin Jones, born Burley, Kirkstall in February, 1901 and Alexander Jones born May 1909 in Burley, Kirkstall. Joseph Edwin Jones migrated to Canada, but it is not when or where in Canada he settled. He may have gone to join his cousin, Stanley Coling Jones (son of George Herbert Jones' elder sister Ada Mary Jones) who went to Canada in November 1919. I don't know what look-ups to check out to work out their movements as the 20th Century progressed and If anyone knows what records to check to determine their later movements, I would appreciate it. Many thanks and cheers.

Hi Bryan
If you go to FreeBMD http://www.freebmd.org.uk/     births, 1911 to say 1940 Put Jones surname, * for first name then Williams as mothers surname.
There are 2 Leeds results and several for Hunslet which is a suburb of Leeds. The Leeds ones are both 1916 and look as if they could be twins. The Hunslet ones carry on until 1927. Hunslet is not near Kirkstall and I don't believe that this is your family as there was a  Jones-Williams birth there in 1913.
Kirkstall was until recently the home of 'Kirkstall Forge' Iron and steel works it is likely that your George worked there. You should get results from google and from the Leodis web sites.

Hi Dave,
Many thanks for getting back to me - your time, trouble and advise are much appreciated. I'll certainly do what you suggest at FreeBMD website. Thanks also for the Kirkstall Forge information, and I'll follow this up as well. Take care.

Cheers

Hi Dave,
I have visited the Leodis website run by Keith Feeney and am not getting anywhere. Have I got the right website? What is the URL to the one you referred to?

Cheers

Bryan

Hi Bryan
The website is
www.leodis.net
Just put Kirkstall forge in the 'terms' box - there are 33 hits, or use the drop down box to search the locations of Burley and Kirkstall
This site brings up a birds eye view of the area if you put Kirkstall in the search box
