Robinson Family of Cheshunt
« on: Monday 04 October 10 03:46 BST (UK) »
I wonder if some kind person could possibly direct me to a way of finding where two of my ancestors worked, please.  One was a Herbert Robinson born in 1854 and whose occupation on the 1871 census was a page.  On the 1881 census was a butler and his sister Emily, born in 1856, on the 1871, is classed as a Ladies maid.   They were born and lived out their lives in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. I cannot view the 1871 but have found their occupation on the census for 1881 when they were back home with their parents for the census day. I should think they both worked in Cheshunt or certainly nearby but for whom is the question.  Would have to be a house of some standing in the community.   Is there a website to find, I wonder where they list servants.
I might be asking too much and so my apologies if I am.
Look forward to hearing your comments and thank you in advance
Best wishes

Thank you Pam for your quick response to my message.

Were you able to decipher the full address of Mary Brown, the home owner.    Obviously, Hebert's sister Emily was working elsewhere on that day in 1871.

I am grateful to you...

Hope you are enjoying some nice weather as we are in Tasmania
Best wishes

It could be Bloomer Cottage :-\  The Road is Churchgate.

I have just googled it and there is a road called Broomer Place off of Churchgate :)

I have visited the property today and taken photographs. It still exists and must have been fairly substantial in that at least 3 detached properties have now been built on part of the original garden. The coach house still stands, but has been converted to modern day use. The name of the property is most definitely Broomer Cottage.

The Head of the property on the 1871 Census is shown as "Dividends" under occupation. I believe this is another way of saying "of independant means" but I stand to be corrected on that.

Was Herbert related to the Robinsons who were coachbuilders?  George Coleman Robinson emigrated to the Victorian gold fields in 1853/4 and his brother (James Tucker Robinson) to New Zealand in 1865 where they had a son Herbert John Robinson in 1872.

Thank you for your message.  I am not sure whether the Robinsons are all related.  I am in touch with descendants of the Robinsons that went to New Zealand and have much information and a book written by George Coleman Robinson who lived in Melbourne, Victoria..  My ancestor was John Robinson of Cheshunt, a Shoe maker.  He was born in 1791, married to Sarah and he died in 1841.   I am still working on this Robinson family.
I live in Australia actually and so any research I do in Cheshunt, is unfortunately, long distance.

Thank you again
Best wishes

You will find me in the family tree at the back of the G.C. Robinson book: Gavin Crawford.  My grandmothers mother on my fathers side of the family was Mary Jane Robinson, G.C.'s daughter.

I'm almost certain that all the Robinsons living in and around Cheshunt were related and I have a large number of records sitting in a folder to organize into a wider tree.  I'll organize into an excel document and pass it on asap?

Would also love to have contact with the Robinson descendants in NZ as I travel there on business twice a year.
