Hancock - 1891 (completed with thanks to Ricky and Suzard)
« on: Sunday 03 October 10 17:45 BST (UK) »
Hello

On the index of the census 1891 from FindMyPast there is an Alice Hancock born 1863 living in East Preston Sussex, she may have been born on the Isle of Wight and possibly Ryde.  Would anyone be kind enough and doesn't mind post the details of this entry please?

Thank you
Ewan

Hi Suz

I couldnt find a place called Ruskington, Sussex, only Ruskington I know of is in Lincolnshire. I checked with GENUKI and that has no Ruskington for Sussex, but has Rustington, which is 1.6 miles from East Preston

ricky

PS

Looking on a map of Sussex in 1879, Broadwater was about a mile north of Worthing

you're right -Rustington fits much better

I'm being picky -but was about to post census and you beat me to it - so I posted where my reading differed

I'm picky about "town" and "Parish" as the area my ancestors were from there are some similar road names in the same parish -but not same Town/hamlet

That's why I always try to put the town /hamlet if listed

In this case it does state Town: Worthing

Thank you both for the details of the 1891 census.  I have been slowly eliminating 'Alices' that were born on the IOW, but primarily born in Ryde for a number of months now.  This one must have slipped my radar because the surname of Hancock was not originally on my list.  I must say it does look promising, the information that especially caught my attention was that Alice Hancock was living on her own means.  I have an Alice on a later census where it states 'own account at home' and I am hoping that this is the same person.  The age is close and the birthplace of Ryde is perfect.    I have managed to find the family of Alice on the 1881 census, parents and siblings were on the Isle of Wight together.   I have found some of their birth registrations, but as it happens I have not been able to trace the registration for Alice Hancock.

Many thanks
Ewan

Added - Ricky you probably never saw this, so a big thank you for all your help wherever you are. :)
