Drowned in Alexander Dock, Liverpool
« on: Sunday 03 October 10 13:53 BST (UK) »
As far as the family story goes, my Grt Granddad died whilst asleep in his bunk (I don't know the name of the ship) in Alexander Dock, Liverpool on 10 November 1903.

I would like to find out the proper story, can anyone recommend a newspaper archieve I should search or should I be looking somewhere else??

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

I would start by getting a copy of his death certificate; family stories can get altered over the years.  ;)

Hi Suzie,

The family history records are currently in the Liverpool Museum on the 2nd floor till the new records office opens some time next month.  There are BMD lists there, though you'd have to order a certificate from the records office, which you can do on line or by phone. If there was a coroner's report it may well be reported in the local press in the Coroner's Inquests columns. I've just been there today looking up a report of an accidental death in 1870 and found two reports which gave a great deal of background information not available anywhere else. There are several daily and weekly papers in the family history section and you can either book a microfilm reader ahead or just take a chance and turn up, which is what I've been doing and so far got lucky.  Good luck.

Hi Allan,

I would really appreciate your help as getting to Liverpool would be difficult for me.  My Grt Granddad was Captain John Davies, born in Bagillt in North Wales in 1868.  My mum seems to now think that the ship may have been called the Ellen Rose but we're not certain.

Thanks again, Suzie   ;D

Hi suzie,
the 1901 shows a list of officers and crew on a vessel named....unfortunately the page is torn at this point....it looks like the St. Helens, ...it has been transcribed as the St Helen.
John Davies. Master. Married age 32 born Flintshire Bagillt.
Thomas Jackson. Mate  "     age 39      "     Manchester.
Could this be the vessel he was on in 1903?

Hi Jean,  that looks really hopeful.  Where did you find it? as his father, another Captain John Davies, died whilst at sea off Ireland.  My family didn't seem to have a lot of luck!!  Thanks, Suzie.

Hi Jean,  I've found it I didn't think of looking in Liverpool for ships/vessels in the 1901 census (as you can tell I'm new to this).  Thanks again, Suzie.
