John Mitchell b c1820
« on: Sunday 03 October 10 12:05 BST (UK) »
Hello folks,

I'm trying to find the birth and family of John Mitchell, who in 1851 says he was born in Barr and in 1871 from Wigton.

He was a Travelling Draper, who settled in Norwich having married Louise Moore from Lowestoft in 1846.

He lived thereafter in Norwich and died in either 1886 or 1887.

His daughter Agnes married William McQueen, son of Andrew Mcqueen of Penninghame, Wigtownshire.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be much obliged.

Thank you very much

Mark ;)

Hi Mark,
The first thing I would do would be to order John and Louisa's marriage certificate as it will have his Father's name and occupation on it, then work back from there.
Do you know if he was in Norwich for the 1841 census?  I can see the McQueen's in Penninghame on 1851

at Nether Barr, which is probably a farm.
let me know when you get the cert. and I'll see if I can help track his family down.

Hi beanie

It has been suggested that James Mitchell and Agnes Syminton are probably John's parents, which I must admit looks like a fair runner, seeing John's daughter was Agnes. There appears little info about them, though.  If you can expand this at all, I'd be much obliged.

Regarding 1841, it would appear not.

However there may well be some connection between the two families prior to coming to Norfolk.

Obviously John Mitchell was first here, marrying in Norwich 1846. He was followed by Duncan McQueen b Penninghame 1840, who married Jane Summerville in Norwich 1869, and then his brother William b 1846 who married the young Agnes Mitchell b Norwich 1854.

As they were all travelling drapers from the same neck of the woods, it has to be a huge coincidence for there to be no link.  Why all gravitate to Norwich?

Best wishes
