Allen parish- Martin
« on: Saturday 02 October 10 18:36 BST (UK) »
From his army discharge papers I have discovered my GG grandfather Francis Martin was born in Allen, Kildare. Francis was born in 1837 and although I have details of his marriage, army career, children and his death in Ballymahon, Longford, I cannot find his birth recorded. Can anyone help me with the parish church names in Allen and advise if I'm likely to find a record of his baptism? I have come up empty handed despite searching many online records. I know from Francis's marriage certificate that his father Henry was an agricultural labourer and was already dead by the time he married in 1862 but I haven't been able to find his mother's name or that of any siblings and would really be grateful for any help. :)

As far as I can see the RC parish for the area is named 'Allen & Milltown' - see : details of records (Irish Times)

Records available include baptisms and marriages from 1820, and are available on microfilm Pos. 4206 in the National Library.

The pay-website of the Irish Family History appear to have RC records for the parish of Allen - see : http://kildare.rootsireland.ie

note RC baptism records dont usually include occupations, but will normally include mother's maiden surname.

Thanks Shane - I've already tried looking for him there, without luck. Do you have any other suggestions?

The IFHF/RootIreland website and the films in the National Library are your best chance. The Kildare record transcipts on that website seem quite good.

Did you find any Martin families around the right time and parish in the records you checked ?

Shane,
Haven't been able to narrow it down to the parish but there are plenty of possible siblings in Kildare around the same time he was born-too many to check them all out, cost wise. I was surprised to find he had been born there because most successive ancestors were born in Ballymahon. I'll keep digging, thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it-this really is my brick wall at present!
