Where is Starnel in Lancashire
« on: Friday 01 October 10 21:53 BST (UK) »
Hi
Can any body help?

From the 1881 census I have a Douglas Audley in Broom County Durham.
He gives his place of birth as Starnel, Lancashire.

Can anybody tell me where Starnel is or am I misreading the census?

Thanks for your help
Regards
Brian

Perhaps Stainall near Garstang? Otherwise known as Stalmine-with-Stainall.

By the way - where is he in 1871, 1861, 1851?
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

No I don't think you are misreading the census, I googled it and found the following page

http://members.multimania.co.uk/clydegen/newpage1.html

LANCASHIRE STRAYS IN DURHAM 1881

Lancashire born folk found in Durham
on census night 1881

Your chappie is one of these:
AUDLEY Douglas 1849 Starnel Broom

I tried googling variations of Starnel Broom but can't seem to pin it to any specific area or town!

Sorry.
Daniels - Liverpool
Brush - Liverpool, Chester
Davies - Flintshire
Tattum - Flintshire
Reece - Flintshire, Liverpool
Roberts - Denbighshire, Conwy

He is not from Starnel Broom. His place of birth is Starnel - he is living in Broom - Broom Hill, Durham.

Brian,

I think your man is Douglas Handley - probably his Lancashire accent- dropping his 'H'.

best wishes

I think heywood has nailed him  :) .
Douglas Handley was baptised at Bury in 1849, and usually names Bury as his birthplace.
There is a place named Darn Hill near Bury.   Douglas was in lodgings in 1881, and probably didn't fill in his own census details.

Hi All,
Many thanks for all your suggestions I will follow them up and see where it leads. My interest is in the Audley surname. I have information about approximately 20 Audley Families. If you are interested take a look at my website www.audleyfamilyhistory.com.

Douglas Audley (the subject of my message is) is a complete mystery to me. My goal at the moment is to either add him to one of my existing Audley families or prove he is not a true Audley.

I will follow all your leads particularily Heyward's suggestion that he was really Douglas Handley., and Galium's suggestion of Darn Hill. It will not be the first time I have found a reference to an Audley in the census only to prove they are not an Audley at all. Equally I have found numerous Audley's whose surname was miss spelt in the census returns.

I will folow the leads and keep you informed.

Regards Brian
