Hi Lachlan50,

Donald McLachlan was one of the youngest of at least nine siblings, he and Jane Young married in Edinburgh in 1863 and emigrated soon after.

My family are descended from Donald's brother, Lachlan, who remained in Fort William, Argyll.  There is too much info to post here so will send a PM with my e-mail.

Regards,

brigau

Hi,
I'm also looking for McLachlan's from Argyll.
Donald Rankin (b1816) married a Marjoy McLachlan/Mclaughlan in 1843 in Kilmallie, Argyll. She died in1883 in the Argyll and Bute District Asylum.
It seems that Donald's mother was a Mary Mclachlan, so I'm wondering and presuming that the families are some how related.
Thanks for your help.
Julia

Hi Julia,

Looking briefly at the family, it seems that Donald Rankin came from Morvern and his wife, Marjory McLachlan, born 1826 came from Ardgour.  Donald's parents were Allan Rankin & Mary McLachlan, and from IGI records he had a brother, John, born 1808 Kingairloch / Strontian, Argyll.

From the 1841 census, the most likely parents for Marjory McLachlan seem to be Duncan & Mary McLachlan, they are at Clovulin, which is the right area for her Ardgour birth.

It would be a great help to know the names of Marjory's parents, do you have these from her 1883 death cert?

regards,

brigau

Hi Brigau,
Thanks so much for all that information.
Unfortunately Marjory's death certificate does not have the names of her parents or husband (although we know this is definitely Donald Rankin) as she died in the asylum, and presumably they were not aware of this information. I've had a quick look at Scotlandspeople and it seems that she must have been Margaret as there dont appear to be any Marjory's born around that time.
Those parents - Duncan and Mary may well fit, as it looks like Donald and Marjory may have been living in Clovullin according to the 1861 census and thats certainly where Donald dies in 1878.
Thanks very much,
Julia

Hi Julia,

I have a few Ardgour OPR births ca1830 - 1845 missing too!

Of three Margery McLachlans born ca1826, only one comes up in Ardgour in the 1841 census.  In 1851 & 1861 the parents, Duncan (born Kilmallie) & Mary (born Morvern) are still at Clovullin with some of the children.  I can't find them in 1871 but their unmarried daughter Mary appears to be employed at Arisaig Manse, Ardnamurchan as a domestic servant by then (although she's tweaked her age over the years!)

By checking the children with an IGI parent search, it brings up Mary McPherson as Duncan McLachlan's wife.  She of course, was born in Morvern, as was Donald Rankin, but there's nothing I can see to prove any sort of connection between the two McLachlan families.  It's a shame that the death cert doesn't confirm Margory's parents!

Hi again,

Just as an addition to that:  IGI parent search shows 3 daughters born to Duncan McLachlan & Mary McPherson, all named Mary. 1820, 1823 & 1826.

The ages fit well with their three eldest girls in the above census: Mary, Margory & Margaret, so you're probably right about Margory being baptised under a different name.
