Hi Pam and Keyboard,

When you refer to "In Boats" and

"1871 Rg10/3706 folio 88 page 35" where does this information come from? be patient with me I am a complete beginner.

Thanks

The reference IN Boats was because all the families on that page were in boats on the canal  at Thurlwood lock on the night of the census.

Cenus
H0107/  /  1841  year reference number and book number  folio number and page number of the census details for that area
H0107/      1851  the rest were year numbers folio numbers and page numbers for the area the census was taken in

RG9/          1861
RG10/        1871
RG11/         1881
RG12/          1891
RG13/          1901

RG14/          1911

So the 1871 census was taken on the night of the 2nd April
It listed all who were stayed at the address that night  listed address occupation age and relationship to the head of the household where they were born  sex whether they were employer or employee or niether  if they were death dumb crippled imbecile. lunatic or such like.

I am a member of a paid site where I found the names 1881 is  free on the familysearch.com site  1911 census is also a separate paid listing.

hello
my ggrandad was also a boatman on the grand union canal @ the same time .looking at some of the birth places he might not have always been on the union canal. my tree covers 6 generations of canal boatmen. smallwood is not a name i have come across in all my years of reserch. Braunston was the main area for weddings ,baptisms & buriels, they have a cem that only has boatmen buried there.do you have any other surname that might be connected with your family as most boat familys only married into their own (other boat men) if you google butty boat alice this may be the alice mentioned on census. will continue to check other records & see if your name shows up

sorry forgot to mention Thurlwood Lock is on the Trent & Mersey canal. Elsmere Port is on the Manchester ship canal. Elsmere port has a large canal museum(google) with a mass of archives
for canals & boat familys you might get some info if you contact of visit them (archive reserch has to be booked)

Thankyou so much Jeanette for that information, I know that the Smallwoods moved around abit, and yes, half of my family tree is taken up with only boatmen, my Mother was the first to be "born on land" as my Grandmother put it for centurys. The other names in my tree are Priddy, Clarke, Clegg, Smith, Smallwood, Bunn, Leek, Harrison, some dating back to the late 1700's but I cant fill in some gaps, any help would be wonderful.

Many thanks Jeanette

Thats great to hear Jeanette,
I will look forward to your PM, I am on Genes Reunited if you want to look at my tree, Just look for Mortimer Bunn around 1819, and Jacquelines tree should come up on the search.

Many thanks

Jacky
