The Quinns of Limerick
« on: Monday 27 September 10 23:15 BST (UK) »
Am looking for Michael Quinn, born in Limerick about 1820..not sure if he came to America or Canada first, but settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan..married Bridget Mulhearn (spelling?) in Michigan and had ten children.

Plenty of Quinn families in Co. Limerick, so you would need a few more clues to track down details on the correct family. As a first step it would be worth searching for details of Michael in the US  - e.g. parents, place of birth from marriage & death certs, census returns, immigration records etc.

Do you know where in Co. Limerick the family lived ?

Since the date is well before the start of Civil registration you need to know the family religion and the parish they lived in. Once you know this you can check to see if records are available in the relevant parish for the years you require.

I would suggest you look for alternate spellings too:)

Such as Michael Quain , Quinn, Quaid ,  McQuinn etc

I have two Michael Quain's -born in Limerick in my tree

Michael b. abt 1852- parents = Timothy Quain and Mary Hayes or Crocker?

Michael b. abt 1861-parents Patrick Quain and Catherine Roche

Hope this helps?

Have some new information regarding Michael Quinn..he was born in 1816, came to US in early 1930's, oral history says through New York..was  probably married shortly after arrival, to a woman last name Ohara..first child born in Otsego, Michigan 1937, then she disappeared, likely died...and he married again, this time To Bridget Mulherin, daughter of Patrick Mulherin, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  All I know is he said he came from Limerick...common family names besides Michael and Bridget are Johanna, Jeremiah, and Frank or Francis, his oldest son was named Albert.  They belonged to St. Andrew's Parrish (Catholic) in Grand Rapids so he may have been Catholic.  I know families often migrated together, the name Nagel and Fitsmorris appear quite often in the census reports, same age group and from Ireland. Other Family surnames here are Coffee and Hughes. My thought is Michael must have gone to Michigan pretty quickly after coming over, so maybe had a reason to go to such a small, rural place in the middle of nowhere..and either the elusive Miss Ohara came with him or the romance bloomed very quickly.  Know there are always clues where we don't first see them, am I missing something?  Wish I could come there to look but not possible right now!!  Attached is a copy of Albert Quinn and his family, maybe someone will see a family resemblance. Thanks for responding!

For your information :

Variations for the surname Quinn- could be Quain & Quaid etc

You might want to keep this in mind when searching in ireland:)
