Hi all,

Our Internet connection is Virgin via cable, we all use the wireless connection to our laptops husband usually in the same room as myself and daughters in their bedrooms. My notebook has worked fine up until a week ago when it started disconnecting, sometimes for hours at a time.

Many thanks

Right lets simplify things.

If your husband & daughter`s Laptops work fine on your wireless connection & your one doesn`t then I`d suggest you look at your laptop first.

Are you sure you are connecting to "Your" wireless connection & not to someone else`s?

It could be possible that your laptop is connecting to a neighbour`s.

There is/are many things that could cause your problem.

regards.

Steve

I don't know too much about setting up my wireless connection, I think it was done for us. (if husband feels brave he may attempt it)

Every computer connected to the internet has an IP address, even when connected to a router at home your laptop will have a 'local' IP address like 192.168.0.1 and your husbands might be 192.168.0.2 and so on. What might have happened is your computer might have the same as your husband's laptop and hence it will not work. That is why I suggested setting your laptop up again.

That was one of  the reasons why I could not get a connection it kept dropping each time it was set.

To determine quickly if you are connected to someone elses network.
Look at the taskbar - bottom right and identify wireless connection icon.
With your laptop switched on together with one other, switch off power to router.
Both laptops should now show loss of wireless connection, you could have a look to see if other wireless networks are enabled whilst router off. (make a note of name if any found)
Now switch off both laptops and restore power to router, waiting a couple of minutes before powering up laptops.

Hi,

First of all thank you for taking the time and trouble to try and help me out, Yes I am connecting to my own wireless connection, when it disconnects and I try to re connect my notebook tells be it cannot be found, (cannot connect to any neighbour's connections either).
My notebook can be connected at the same time as my husbands/daughters then mine will disconnect whilst theirs stay connected. I have tried plugging the broadband connection directly into my notebook but no luck, husband is not sure how to re set notebook,  but we have re set the router and modem,  also our Internet connection does not appear to be password protected, would this be causing a problem? Not sure how to do that either.
Thanks to all for help and suggestions, sorry not very tech minded.

To try your laptop direct to cable modem.
1) Switch off cable modem and connect lead to laptop - bypassing router.
2) Switch on cable modem and all all lights to stabalise (@3minutes).
3 Turn on laptop and select your browser.
Nb After doing the above test and using router in circuit make sure modem and router are both switched off.
Turning cable modem on first then router - allowing 2-3minutes between each switch on.

Many thanks Brian,

Have followed this and it had not made any difference, I cannot understand why only my notebook keeps disconnecting and the other laptops in the house are not. I will try contacting my Internet provider and see what they say.

 Thanks again

Try looking at the Virgin Media home page: http://www.virginmedia.com/
Look at the right hand side of page for 'help and support'.
Click on, and work through the article that is most appropriate for you.
(You need to know what model of modem and router you have).
I have a model 250 modem with a Buffalo router, as an example.
