Downley School 'number 4'
« on: Sunday 26 September 10 12:37 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

My husbands family are very much rooted in Wycombe/Stokenchurch and when his grandmother moved from her house (in Downley, where her mother and g.mother were also born) we unearthed a great hoard of treasure - old photos, diaries, certificates etc. Well, we have managed to name and roughly date the majority of photos but there are still several which are mysteries! One in particular, is a very old photograph of Downley School with just the note 'number 4' and no date. The clothing suggests turn of the century but we are not sure. We don't recognise anyone in the photo and wonder how to date it, or who would be best to ask about the date. I wonder whether the Bucks free press site may be able to help, or does anyone on here have any knowledge of the old Downley School and who may be able to help us please? Is it worth me putting it on here?

Thanks for your time,
Alice.

Here is a low res scan of the photo, if anyone can help please get in touch. The sign reads 'Downley School No. 4'

Also, if anyone knows where any archives from the school may be, Id also be interested to know, as the original school was knocked down several years ago. I asked at the Bucks info centre last week and they didnt have any there.

Thank you :)

Hi,

I have relatives living on Downley common from 1891 until the present day so it is very much of interest.  However I do not have photographs of them from this era.  The earliest I have is about 1920.

Lovely photograph

Hi,

I am very interested in the village of Downley as a lot of my relatives lived there. My Gr Grandmother Ada Stone, born in 1867 was born in Downley and I believe she was a school teacher there until she married Harry Sharp(e) in 1889. I don't have any photos of her until later in life, so couldn't say if the photo was of her.

Ann

Hello, Iam still keen to find out more about this photo so have decided to post it in the 'photo' part of the forum to see if I can at least get it dated. I have also found some other unknown Downley faces and have put them in another post so if anyone recognises anyone PLEASE do let me know :) Thankyou, Alice.
