This could be William & Sarah's marriage:

William Howson married Sarah Brooks
10 Nov 1824 Newcastle-under-Lyne, Staffs

Strange that James' wife Elizabeth had a middle name Brooks too  ???

William Howson 1803-1862 born in Stone, Staffordshire, he was a Grocer.
His wife was Sarah Moreton Brooks 1804-1879 born Muccleston, Staffordshire

William & Sarahs children were:
Ellen Brooks Howson b. 1827 (she must be the one visiting James in 1851 census)
William Moreton Howson b. 1829
James Gilbert Howson b. 1831
Hannah Howson b. 1833
Elizabeth Howson b. 1836

Sarah Howson b. 1840
Bernard Howson b, 1842
Anne Jane Howson b. 1844

James Gilbert Howson & Elizabeth must have had more children after they arrived in Canada.  Here's the marriage of one of their children.

Florence Ada Howson, age 23
born abt. 1864 Toronto
Father: James Gilbert Howson
Mother: Elizabeth Brook Howson
Spouse: Ernest John Charles Norris
Spouse age: 24
Spouse birth place: London, England
Spouse Father: John Sanderson Norris
Spouse Mother: Hannah Rebecca Norris
Marriage date: 21 June 1887
Location: York, Ontario

If Florence was born in Toronto in 1864, the family must have arrived there before the 1871 immigration record I posted earlier (perhaps they went back to England for a visit in 1871)

Here's another marriage:

Annie Haworth Howson, age 32
B. abt. 1857 Liverpool
Father: James Gilbert Howson
Mother: Elizabeth Brookspaith Howson (think this should be Brooks Smith)
Spouse: Frederick Grundy, age 31
Spouse birth place: Gorishanding, Ontario
Spouse father: Oswald Grundy
Spouse mother: Elizabeth Grundy
Marriage date: 12 June 1889
Place: York, Ontario

Aaahhh - Remember the 1891 Canada Census when Harry and his mother were lodging wth Fredk. & Annie Grundy - this is them  :D

Annie wasn't on 1861 Liverpool census with mom, dad & Harry because she was staying with her Grandparents in Newcastle, will post details tomorrow.
I have found her on the same 1871 immigration list as mom, dad & Harry.

Past my bedtime  :D
Cheers, Jool

Jools (aka Dectective-Supremo)... I awake to find you have uncovered a whole family tree!  How did you do it??
So Harry's daughter Madeline was named Madeline Howarth .... When she was referred to as Madeline Howarth in her obituary, I thought "Howarth" was a mistaken spelling of her surname  (Howson) - but in fact it was a middle name.  She was named for her great grandmother:Elizabeth Brooks Smith Howarth.   I wonder is there any connection to the place, Howarth... where the famous Bronte sisters lived in Yorkshire...

Look at those classic Victorian names...Clement, Elizabeth, Uriah Howson - that's like something out of Dickens.

I have to write all this out in a chart to really grasp the intricacies of the relationships.  Really amazing sleuthing.  There's no place for these Howsons to hide!
Just wonderful :D

Thank you !!

Hi Clarissabell, I'm so glad you're pleased with the findings, it makes it all worth while.  In answer to your question, "how did you do it", with a lot of help from Ancestry  ;) and not giving up when you think you can't find something.

I think the place of birth of Toronto for Florence Howson on her marriage record is incorrect, she is on the 1871 Canada census as born England.  This means the family most likely did emigrate in 1871.

Here they are in 1871 living in District 46 West Toronto.

Elizabeth Howson, widowed, b. abt. 1833 England
Annie Howson, b. abt. 1857 England
Harris (must be Harry) Howson, b. abt. 1859 England
Florence Howson, b. abt. 1864 ENGLAND
Eliza Howarth, widowed, b. abt. 1798 England (not Elizabeth's mother, she is Sarah. How is Eliza related?)

Elizabeth is listed as widowed, so sadly it seems James Gilbert Howson must have died very shortly after they arrived in Canada, if the 1871 immigration is correct.  I'll see if I can find a death record.

I think the 1871 immigration date is thrown into confusion again  ::) as James Howson died in 1869 in Ontario.

James Gilbert Hawson (spelling?)
Died 30 Nov 1869
Age 38
Profession: Book Keeper
Where Born: Staffordshire, England
Cause of Death: Diseased digestive organs, 5 months illness
Informant: R.G. Banks, 44 Gerrard Street East
Registered: 4 Dec 1869
County: York

There seems to be 2 versions of the 1871 Canadian Census, one listed as my previous post and another which shows the same as above but but they are living with a "Banks" family headed by R.G. BANKS, the same name as the informant on James' death record.  To add to the confusion, Florence is born England on the one census and Ontario on the other  ???

OK, this should sort out the immigration date (I'll make my mind up soon won't I  ;D)

The 1911 Census of Canada states Elizabeth Brooks Smith Howson's year of immigration was 1861.  So it seems Florence b. 1864 would have been born Canada after all.

1911:
Frederick Grundy, b. July 1857 Ontario, head,
Annie H Grundy, b. Feb 1857 England, wife,
Maude E Grundy, b. Nov 1892 Ontario, daur,
E.B.S. Howson, b. Jan 1833 England, mother-in-law,
Mary E Banks, b.  Nov 1843 England, single, cousin (there's the connection with the Banks family, Mary was the daughter of the  R.G. Banks on James' death record)
