Catherune Ward 1848 Help

Can SKP help me over a very high brick wall that I have come up against
 I have been searching for a while for the birth details of Catherine Ward brn abt 1848 at Berwick Father Charles Ward Mother Isabella McConnor.
1851 Census show them living at Slaggyford Village, Knarsdale,Northumberland, if anyone has Catherine in their tree or can impart any information no matter how small, it wll be greatly appreciated

Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/75.  Prior to then -lots of births went unregistered

Although this on the Northumberland Board Berwick is actually in Scotland.   The 1851 Census states she was bc.1846 (not 1848).   I note the birthplace given for her sister is Bridgeston but can't find such a place - wonder if it should be Bridgeton which is a district of Glasgow i.e. both girls born Scotland but then it's maybe a district in Northumberland.

Isabella's surname suggested a Catholic connection - can find no trace of a marriage for her and Charles Ward although the 1851 census states that she, like him, born Gloucestershsire.  Couldn't find them in 1861.

Anyway, as Scotlands People have recently added some Catholic Records to their site I checked on there and think I could have found Catherine's baptism in Glasgow.   (I note her father was a Rail Labourer so no doubt they moved around a lot - the baptism is 3 months after the birth so they may well have moved from Berwick to Glasgow by then).   The details are:

Catherine Ward b.31/8/1845, bp.27/10/1845 St. Andrews Catholic Church, Glasgow, dau. of Charles Ward and Isabella McConnell .   Checked the 1851 Census for Scotland and couldn't find another Charles and Isabella there nor a Catherine Ward.     

As your Catherine aged 5 in 1851 i.e. bc.1845/1846 the above entry fits - looked at the original entry and mother's surname definitely looks like McConnel and not McConnor.

Sorry if this causes another problem, but Berwick upon Tweed has been part of England since 1482, as you will see if you look it up on Wikipedia, although before that it did change hands between England and Scotland several times.

All is says on the 1851 Census is Berwick - this may well have been the county rather than Berwick upon Tweed itself especially in light of the absence of a birth or baptism in England.

Many thanks for the information that you posted it may help me a great deal, but I wonder if not to much trouble you can provide me with the index number of the birth of Catherine ie Volume and Page number so that I can apply for a birth certificate, there could be a mistake in the writing of McConnor and McConnel, you see I have the birth certificate of Charles the son of Charles and Isabella who was brn 16 May 1850 at Parsden? Street Newcastle on Tyne on closer look at the certificate Isabella's surname could be either McConnor or McConnel (hard to call) as regarding Mary's I have hunted through all the census's to try and find the family to no avail, Catherine died at Cardiff March Quarter 1900.
Once again may I thank for your efforts in trying to help me to solve my problem.

You can only view this on Scotlands People and it is a baptism not a civil birth entry.   Births civil registration did not start in Scotland until 1855 so there is no birth certificate.

If you visit Scotlands People while you can search for free you have to purchase credits to view.   Costs £6 for 30 credits.   Having said that, you'll often find records there that you won't find anywhere else plus if you look at their birth/marriage/death certificates they include far more information that English ones do.   Plus you don't have to order the certificates you can view and print them yourself.
As I stated, I found the Catherine Ward baptism in the Catholic records which they have only recently added to the site.
