Stockfords/Elkins at PLOUGHLEY 1911 to 1999
« on: Friday 24 September 10 13:39 BST (UK) »
Mona May STOCKFORDc 1911 married my ancestor Eli Lockwood ELKINS c 1909 at Ploughley in 1937. The subsequent trail has been difficult with very few clues.   Eli Lockwood Elkins died in 1982 at Binfield Berkshire and Mona May died at Ploughley in 1999.
Please could I ask if anyone has any clues, in particular if any children were born?
Regards
Norman Elkins

Hi Norman

I can't find any births for Elkins with mother's maiden name Stockford (but that's not definitive)

Do you have either of the death certificates?  The informant might be a relation

Thanks for your reply.
I have been the Elkins born to a Stockford route. As you say the death informant for Mona could have been a relative and I may have to get the certificate. In the meantime I am trying a similar sort of route by visiting Berkshire Records Office on Wednesday. The Electoral Rolls for Binfield are availabe and I am hoping a child still living at home is qualified to vote.
I am comfortable with Binfield as I have found a E L Elkins in the Telephone Directories.
Wish me luck
Norman

I'm afraid this information won't help you find descendants of Mona and Eli but it could be of use to you:

The birth of Mona M STOCKFORD (mother's maiden name NEWMAN) was registered in December Qtr 1911 in Woodstock Registration District.  There was also a Samuel J. S. STOCKFORD registered in December Qtr 1915, same mother's maiden name, same Registration District.

The only STOCKFORD/NEWMAN marriage I could find was in December Qtr 1896, Woodstock Registration District, between Joseph Herbert STOCKFORD and Annie Elizabeth NEWMAN.

Joseph Herbert STOCKFORD was registered in March Qtr 1878, Woodstock Registration District, and Annie Elizabeth C. NEWMAN was registered in June Qtr 1877, same Registration  District.  In the 1901 census this couple are living in Dornbrook Road, Steeple Barton, Oxfordshire.  Joseph is listed as aged 23, a butcher, born Middle Barton. Oxfordshire, and (Annie) Elizabeth is also listed as 23 years of age and born in Duns Tew, Oxfordshire.

Woodstock Registration District ceased to exist in 1932 when it became known as Ploughley.

Thanks for your latest helpful reply.
I have looked in the  1911 census and as you know Mona wasn't kind enough to be born before it. The 1901 Family now has 3 Children Joseph 10, Bertha 8 and after a gap of 7 years Albert aged 1. The same household at High St Westcote Barton contains a Newman brother and sister in law.
It is just possible that The Berkshire Records Office will be able to help me about Mona when I'm there on Wednesday.

Source acknowledged as the excellent FreeBMD site - long may they transcribe.

Hi, just a bit more for the melting pot ...

A search on the above site for Births - Stockford with Newman as Mothers Maiden Name :

Mona M Stockford - 1911-Dec Qtr - Woodstock RD
Samuel J S - 1915-Dec Qtr - Woodstock RD

( Hope this last entry does not conflict with living persons policy ? )

Also other Births - see site for names :
1937-Sep Qtr - Islington RD
1939-Jun Qtr - Chipping N RD
1948-Mar Qtr - Chipping N RD

Some other Stockford Marriages in Woodstock RD
1869-Dec x 2 Mgs
1881-Jun
1885-Sep
1896-Dec

Then, when they began to include the Spouse surname
1937-Mar Qtr Islington RD
1938-Mar Chipping N RD
