Where his birthplace is given as St Maxwellton

Where?  I can't see a 1901 entry with the profile given.  Was he married before or after 1891?

If before - can we have details of his wife and any children born before 1891

Maxwelltown is the main part of the parish of Troqueer. It's the opposite (and Kirkcudbright) side of the river from Dumfries.  St Maxwellton looks like a bad transcription by a certain site!

so a  Troqueer birthplace is correct.

I posted his 1881 birthplace as a sort of "warning" that it could vary from Troqueer so that anybody looking for him would be alerted to the possible variation

The 2 older children on the 1901 are presumably Helen's from her previous marriage although shown as Stewart on the entry.  They were both born in England

Given the change of birthplace - are you absolutely certain you have the right 1901 entry?

Thomas didn't marry Ellen/Helen until 1894 - see :

If no one has found Thomas in 1891, lovelaj, I'll have a look tomorrow - had a long journey today and need to recover!

Hi Lovelaj

I've been looking through all of your previous postings as I was sure that Ireland had been mentioned before.

I see that you thought he'd moved to Ireland  for the period covering the 1891 census - is that so?
