St John Wagstaffe

I am looking for info on the parents of St John Wagstaffe born Puddington area of Beds Jan 1810.
believe his parents were Richard Wagstaffe and wife Sarah I have a poss wedding in Puddington in 1800.Could anyone throw any light on the births of Richard and Sarah please

It would have been helpful, if you want details of Sarah, to have given her surname as shown on the 1800 marriage entry, YEAT.

That St John Wagstaff had a middle name of LIVESEY is also relevant, given the 1760 marriage of Richard Wagstaff and Jane Livesey in Puddington. There's a baptism on the IGI (extracted so reliable) of Richard Wagstaff, son of Richard and Jane, at Podington on 19 July 1767.

There are burials in Podington of Richard Wagstaffs on 29 Apr 1793 and on 25 Feb 1823 aged 56 which fits pretty neatly with the 1767 baptism. Sarah Wagstaff age 61 was buried at Podington on 16 July 1826. I can't see a baptism for her in Beds, but perhaps she was from Northants which is within spitting distance of Podington. You need to check the marriage entry to see if a parish of residence other than Podington is shown for Sarah

There was a Benjamin Yates who married in Podington in 1804. Could he have been Sarah's brother, or father even? Benjamin's an easier name to trace than Sarah!

But I can't find him, nor his wife Jane Craxton. Again, reference to the parish register is needed. I wonder if they got sucked into that black hole, otherwise known as Northamptonshire

Could the St John indicate some sort of connection to the aristocratic St John family from Bletsoe, 5 miles from Podington?

The Podington parish record transcript up to 1812 does not offer much additional information to that given by David & to what's available from the IGI at FamilySearch site.

The 30 Sept 1800 marriage says both Richard Wagstaffe & Sarah Yeat were from Podington & married by licence. You'll have to wait for the weekend for me to check the marriage licence transcript at Bedford library unless someone finds it in the depths of Anc*'s database.

Again the 23 Nov 1760 marriage of 'Mr' Richard Wagstaffe of Podington to 'Miss' Jane Livesey was by licence.

Baptisms of children of Richard & Jane include an earlier Saint John Livesey Wagstaffe in 1762, Henry in 1764 & Richard on 19 Jul 1767. 

'Mr' Richard Wagstaffe was buried at Podington 29 April 1793 & the Beds Archives have a copy of letters of Adminstration of Richard W of Podington, Hinwick; yeoman ref A 1794/5. An earlier Richard Wagstaffe farmer was buried 26 Jan 1743 & his will ref 1744/4 is also at the Beds Archives.   

The PR index groups Yeat with Yates & the only other entry is marriage David found of Benjamin Yates to Jane Craxton, both of Poddington. However the next marriage on 20 Aug 1804 is that of Euseby Craxton of Wollaston, Northants to Hannah Bettles.

The marriage licence dated 5/9/1800 is for Richard Wagstaffe, gent of Podington aged 21+ to marry Sarah Yeat of Podington; surety was by William Faldo/Falder yeoman of Bedford.

Although the PR has that the marriage of Richard Wagstaffe to Jane Livesey was by licence - there is no entry in the marriage licence transcript.

Other entries for St John Livesey Wagstaffe esquire of Podington have him giving surety to 2 other couples' marriages dated 1/6/1793 & 6/3/1799

The bad news for you is that if you've moved from Peterborough you no longer have an LDS Family History Centre on your doorstep

What pressure ?  I use my bus pass to save petrol & car parking costs ..... however I do wish that people who ask for look ups didn't leave it until the Saturday morning .... !

& Bob while you are at Bedford - why not join the Beds FHS - meetings are first Friday of each month.
