Duncan Burns
« on: Thursday 23 September 10 00:34 BST (UK) »
My Great Great Grandfather Duncan Burns was a Blacksmith and died in Ballintra Co. Donegal in 1879. I have no record of him other than a possible run in with the law in Carrigfergus, Co. Antrim in 1839 where he got 2 months for drunk and disorder...  :P.  The name sound Scottish but I can't find a birth cert etc, likely around 1813? He had a daughter Rose Anne Burns, no birth cert for her either. Can you help?

Hi,
There will be no birth certificates as Civil Registration of births started in 1864. Before that you have to depend on church records where these exist.

Thank you both. I hadn't seen the Ballyshannon Directory before and I see other family names on that. Thanks a lot.

Hi, I am new to RootsChat and noticed your posting re Duncan Burns. I believe that he is also my Great, great grandfather. His son William moved to London and joined the Metropolitan Police force and I am descended from that line. I have also found a son James who was a carpenter in Ballintra and other possible leads. Like you, no luck with the birth record, or marriage of Duncan. The family were Roman Catholic and the Ballintra Parish records only go back to 1860. I believe that Duncan's wife was a Catherine and her surname was Gallagher. I think that they are Scots by origin (probably Ayrshire) and that some of them went to the United States and Canada. There is a Mathew Burns of Ballintra (also a blacksmith), wife Margaret and numerous children emigrating from Londonderry in 1847 to St John's New Brunswick.
Some of my info is solid but some is conjecture and the result of fishing expeditions.. So maybe we should compare notes? Not sure how to go about that.
Looking forward to hearing from you

Hi Goldie That's great information and fits with  few bits I know, delighted to hear from you. I ran into a blank wall on Duncan Burns and went in search of the other side of the family. I'll dig out my info and pass it on to you.
