Missing icon from Taskbar *COMPLETED*
« on: Wednesday 22 September 10 10:18 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Today my Vista laptop decided to go to laptop heaven.   Have now got  a new one with Windows 7 and finding my way around, the only gripe I have is, that my two little monitors are not on the bottom taskbar nor the wording "connect" on the  start menu.

My wireless icon shows, but that doesn't give me the speed.    With my XP and Vista, it was so easy to connect/disconnect from the start menu and I sure miss it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Right click on the task bar
select properties
select customize
select network
select show icon and notifications
click on OK

(or if you want the icons for all processes to show permanently click on show all icons and click on OK)

Hi Falkryn

Have tried that it doesn't work.   The network is showing as my wireless.

In Windows 7 the default is to connect automatically to the wireless network identified when set up

If you don't want this automatic connection then

left click on the notification icon in the taskbar (looks like a small monitor with a cable next to it)

This brings up the list of wireless connections within range

left click on your network and clear the connect automatically box.

Hi,

The small monitor with the cable was there before I connected to the wireless, but when my wireless icon appeared the other vanished, so can't click on it.

Thanks anyway, guess I will just get used to disconnecting a different way.

Could go to the Control panel, find the networking bit and do the "disconnect" from there. OR, click the setting that shows the icon and notifications in the taskbar.

No idea why you'd want to NOT be connected to the WiFi network all the time, though! (Unless it is one of those NextG modem thingies and you've got a low data limit.) ;)

After getting my paws slapped twice from my old ISP for going over my data limit for being connected all the time, I just used to disconnect when I was working off line on the laptop in the lounge, probably habit.   But since I changed providers, I increased my data limit. 8)

I now have "connect" on the start bar, so can disconnect from there.
