Alness Ross's
« on: Wednesday 22 September 10 07:16 BST (UK) »
Hi Im trying to trace any living relatives who are descended from my great grandparents Finlay Ross and Elizabeth Stewart.

Finlay Ross b: 1832 at Resolis, Ross and Cromarty
                   d: 23rd feb 1889 at Alness

Elizabeth Stewart b: 1840 at Fodderty, Ross and Cromarty
                              d: 28th july 1916 at Alness

They are buried at Alness Parish Church

They lived at 71 Main street Alness  in 1881 with their 6 children : Harriet, Finlay, Lilias, Donald  [my grandfather] Elizabeth and Peter .

Finlay and Elizabeths son Finlay went on to be the blacksmith at Foulis Smithy where he died in 1951 aged 83 he was at that time survived by a son Finlay who may have came to live at Dingwall , not really sure .

I would be grateful if anyone with any info could help me please or any members of this family would like to get in touch please post me on this site or reply by email

Thankyou so much
The areas Im researching are Alness, Fodderty , Foulis, Fearn, Cadboll , Kincardine, Resolis . the names Im researching are Finlay Ross/ ElizabethStewart,{Resolis and Fodderty and Alness}.  Donald Ross/Jessie McCulloch,[Alness and Cadbole}.  Finlay Ross, {foulis Smithy}. have you tried looking at scotlandspeople for the death certificate of finlay d1970, it should have the informant's name and address; it might be a good starting point.

alternatively, you could try writing a letter for publishing in the ross-shire journal or alness' local community newsletter (sorry can't remember the name at the moment). you may get a good response. :)

let me know if you don't get any further and i'll see if i can think of something else for you. (i'm quite local to the area)

kind regards,
Lorna

p.s did you get to Alness heritage centre; i'm told they are really helpful but haven't been in yet myself :)

Hi Lorna

I certainly will try the 1970 link for Finlay Ross deceased, thanks for that tip, I will also put an ad in the Ross-shir e journal and keep fingers crossed.

I did in fact go to the Alness heritage site and they were absolutely wonderful , Joan Ross who is in charge actually took us to the grave as we were on holiday with a coach trip and did not have a car , the other staff were amazing trying to find links for me but to no avail.

I however left some details with them but as yet Ive not heard anything,
I will look for the Alness community paper and see if I can subscribe to it on line then I can  place an ad.
I do have a  monthly newspaper of which Joan Ross is the editor it is called Alness and District Times, I wonder if this is the one you mean.

Thanks again Lorna for your tips and your offer of help  it is greatly appreciated

Kind Regards
Myra

Hi Lorna

I tried your suggestion about looking up Finlay Ross's death in 1970 , he died in Dingwall but I cant obtain an image to get the informant, I m trying to guess his age as to when he married if he ever did and try that angle. I would be grateful for any tips you may have .
I cant seem to be able to place an ad in the Ross-shire journal for some reason , Im going to try the Dingwall papers

I did however get a marriage certificate for Finlay and Jane Fraser they were married in Dingwall on the 7th december 1906 , at the National Hotel.  her parents were Hugh Fraser [farmer] and Lilias Fraser nee Munro.

thankyou
kind regards
Myra
