Berwick burial
« on: Tuesday 21 September 10 14:49 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me where someone who died in Berwick in 1870 would be buried?  I believe he would have been connected with the Golden Square Presbyterian Or Scotch Church, Berwick Upon Tweed.

Most likely to be either the Tweedmouth Cemetery or the Berwick Burial Ground alongside the Great North Road. The former opened in the early 1800's and the latter during the 1850's.

There is a burial register for both sites at the Berwick Records Office but early Tweedmouth entries don't have plot numbers recorded. The Berwick Burial Ground does have plot numbers but the council seem unwilling or unable to provide any guidance as to where a particular plot is actually located. I'm still trying to locate a (now unmarked) plot four years after discovering the plot number and the council have been no help whatsoever. :'( :'( :'(

Hi B
I am also looking for a plot in the North Road burial ground.Have you had any success? I wonder if it would be worthwhile to visit the Church site on a Sunday if there is still a service there? Thanks for any info. Boston14

I visited Berwick Record Office before I went hunting and Linda Bankier, the Archivist, was a great help.  She was able to tell me where in the cemetery the 'non-conformists' were buried and I found those I was looking for without any trouble.  I also found some of their children who had died in infancy/childhood  in the burial ground of the church near the Records Office.
Happy hunting

The North Road burial ground is a cemetery, the problem (in common with many places), is that burials connect to many of the churches in the area, the Parish Church and Church of Scotland buildings for example are adjacent to each other but there are at least two burial grounds that could have been used ove.

I have to agree, Linda really knows her stuff and is very helpful, in my case however the problem is locating an unmarked grave, I have the plot number and rough idea where within the burial ground the plot lies but with other unmarked plots either side and nothing to indicate which is which i'm stumped. Linda doesn't have the plans and the council department involved are masters at avoiding giving replies to enquiries.
