Scarfe/Scarf/Scarff - Chelmondiston
« on: Tuesday 21 September 10 04:41 BST (UK) »
Hello

Am looking for any information on a Susannah Scarfe/Scarf/Scarff, who was born in Chelmondiston.  The only info I have on her is after she was married to a Thomas Whiting.  Am looking in particular for any records of parents/siblings.  Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Lisa

I have found a Susannah Scarff married to Thomas Whiting on 7 May 1822 - Chelmondiston.

In 1851 a Thomas c1796 & Susanah c 1797 Whiting were living at the Bristol Arms, Shotley, Suffolk.  He was born in Hitcham, she in Awarton.  Children Sarah Ann c1828, John, c1830, Jane c1836 & Susanah c1839.  At a quick look I was unable to find them in 1841 or 1861.  Their son John appears to be living in Ipswich in 1861 - working as a seaman.

Hope this is of help.

Found them in Shotley in 1841 - looks like 'Whiten' on the census rather than Whiting.  Seems there was also a Thomas b c1826.

The Bristol Arms is a well known public house in Suffolk, looks out over the estuary.  http://www.thebristolarms.com/

By the way, the parish of ERWARTON is pronounced ARWARTON  ;)

Presumably we have found the right family?

I have found burials for a James Scarff at Chelmondiston on 8 Aug 1827 ag 68.  Could this be her father - if she was married in Chelmondiston it is likely the family were living there.

I have also found an entry for the burial of a James son of James & Mary on 14 Apr 1806 at Ewarton.  The 1851 census gave Awarton as her birthplace.  Could James & Mary be the parents of Susannah also?

A Mary Scarff was buried at Chelmondiston on 22  Oct 1835. Age 71

Going back further there is a suggestion that a Jeremiah & Ann Scarfe lived in Ewarton in the 1750's as burials are recorded for their son Jeremiah in 1758 and the burial of Ann wife of Jeremiah in Feb 1759.

Hope this gives you a start.

K

Found you 3 marriages in Chelmondiston about the same time as Susannah's:

John Scarf m Mary Brown 17 April 1825
Thomas Scarf m Ann Brooks 31 Oct 1834
Anne Scarf m John Willoughby 1 Nov 1825
