Isaac WELHAM/Schulen Pottery/Cow and Pail pub Rope Walk
« on: Monday 20 September 10 21:54 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone out there who can help?

ISSAC WELHAM (I think the name was slightly spelt differently) married Charlotte OFFORD in Old Newton. They had 3 sons and lived in STOWMARKET. The sons were Isaac, James and John. Isaac jnr and John both died young deaths registered in Stowmarket, as did Isaac snr and his wife Charlotte. James survived them all, moved to IPSWICH and had two daughters of his own, one of whom was also called Charlotte.

Desperate to find further info on Isaac snr ::)

The Schulens, the pottery and the Cow and Pail are all associated with the Rope Walk area of IPSWICH.

Grateful for any help at all.

Cheers

Julie

Hi Julie,

You mention on your other post that the Banns had a different spelling of Isaac - have you actually found the marriage?

And also, when you say the children died young and deaths were registered in Stowmarket, that they died after 1837, when civil registration began?

I've found a few references to an Isaac Welham, but this one would have been born in about 1791/2 and is probably not yours......  shame...

You make a reference to the Cow and Pail pub too - is there a connection?

Dear All,

Apologies about making a mess with info I've provided on this one.  :-\

Hopefully this will make more sense -

Isaac snr was born 1780 - 1790, married Charlotte approx 1811 in Old Newton.
Isaac snr, Charlotte and Isaac jnr were all dead prior to 1837.

John appears on the 1841 census listed as married to Mary, one son (babe) also called Isaac and living in Onehouse. John dies very soon afterwards.
James moved to Ipswich. His two daughters were Charlotte and Lucy.
Mary, Johns widow, also moves to Ipswich after she has remarried to a gent by the surname Lorimer. There are further children in that relationship. Isaac, Mary and Johns son stays with her and her new husband.

I hope this will allow things to progress. Yorkslass, your post sounds promising. Here's hoping  :D

The pottery and pub is for the otherside of the family. I have an interest in the social side of things here, so I will find the book suggested.

Hello again,

Still can't find a baptism for your Isaac.  The references I found were about an Isaac Welham's army record.  It's available from the National Archives - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=7&CATID=-3893185&j=1

and they also appear on Findmypast records.

These records aren't terribly informative, but I guess it's possible it could be your Isaac.  This man was born about 1791, he was born in Barking, Suffolk, but it doesn't give his date of birth, nor any info about his parents, nor whether he was married, etc.

He joined up with the 7th Hussars on 28 March 1812, and was discharged in 1818 mainly because of an "ulcerated leg"  which was apparently caused by a kick from a horse, in France !!  The record does say that he served at Waterloo, which might open up other avenues.....

It gives a nice description of his appearance.... "Five feet seven, brown hair, brown eyes, dark complexion", and his occupation is shown as labourer.

I'd love to think he was your Isaac..... but there's nothing definite to link him.

I've found an Isaac Welham buried at St Peter & St Mary, Stowmarket on 30 August 1830.  Is he "yours"?

Julie,

Just had a search on the pilot Familysearch site, and come up with something quite interesting.

No Isaac Welhams born for the dates you need, but there is an Isaac Bird, baptised by a William Bird and Susan Wellham - 4 April, 1787 at Bradfield St Clare, Suffolk.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/09u7/

It's only about 16 miles from Stowmarket.
