James Henry McDowell b.1895
« on: Monday 20 September 10 18:48 BST (UK) »
I am searching for my grandfather's birth details. He married my grandmother in Norfolk January 1918 aged 23. The family lived in Weaver Street 1923-27.  The latter three of 6 children were born there. He died Belfast 1927 aged 32. The family returned to Norfolk. His marriage certificate showed his occupation as labourer and his father as John Henry McDowell, occupation Carter. I believe there to be an irish connection as I cannot find him in English bmd's. Any help or suggestions appreciated

Could he have joined up for the army in 1914? There are Army Pension papers for a James McDowell who was living in Banbridge, C. Down, N. Ireland. Army no 18654. Occupation: Bleacher; father John McDowell of Railway St Banbridge. You can access these online or through the National Archives. Reg:Leinster Regiment - May 1915.

Thank you both very much.
I have the Norfolk connection sussed on my Grandmother's side. The family home was in or around Fakenham.
I followed through James McDowell - went on Ancestry and downloaded his pension record. Looked promising. However when I cross-checked with census 1901 and 1911 it transpires that his name is James Edward McDowell. He also appears to have given his age on enlistment as 19 in 1915, two years older than both censuses.
Still a possibility but the the second name is the problem.
