Just thinking with that entry for birth of Mary Ann to George and Catherine in 1870. She shows a Catholic christening.

Just checking on Scotlands People, and the three births that we had on the Old Parish Registers for George, Margaret and William, children to John and Agnes (Haig) also show on the Roman Catholic birth or christening registers. Sometimes you find that Roman Catholic events were recorded on the Old Parish Registers (presbyterian denomination, the established Church of Scotland). There are two entries showing relating to the RC marriage for John Oman and Agnes Haig (maybe banns and marriage?).

The Roman Catholic background for the family explains why there was so little to be found on the family on IGI  :)

Hi Monica,

When George (1845)  and William (1850) both married it was CoI. When George married Catherine Molloy in 1870 they married in a RC church.

Thanks
Paula

Hi there , a bit late perhaps , I think the missing phrase after "unmarried persons" is
"and not within the forbidden degrees of consanguinity" .
Phew !
