George and Harriet in 1881:

George Oman 52, commercial traveller b. Edinburgh
Harriet Oman 51 b. Dublin
Agnes Oman 16, b. Dublin
Harriet Holdon 3, granddaughter b. Greenock

Address: 27 Main St, Bridgeton Glasgow

By co-incidence, George's death is also showing as the same year as William's, 12 Jul 1892 in Edinburgh.

You need to verify all this podgeb - Ancestry trees can be a good guide but where original sources are not included, you need to be able to double check  :)

Paula, with that reference to William and George's mother potentially being Agnes Haig, interesting to note William's middle name at the registration of son Archibald's birth, from IGI:

ARCHIBALD HEWITT OMAN  Birth: 23 SEP 1874 High Church, Paisley
Parents: WILLIAM HAIG OMAN and MARY ANN MURPHY

Monica

Added: The Haig middle name shows on William's birth entry on the Old Parish Registers also. From IGI, some of the children showing to John Oman and Agnes Haig:

1. MARGARET OMAN  Birth: 18 SEP 1821 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh
2. WILLIAM HAIG OMAN Birth: 07 MAR 1824 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh
3. GEORGE OMAN Birth: 21 OCT 1825 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh

Hi Monica,

Thank you again,
Not sure about the William Oman, our William had a son George (this George had the middle name Hague) who married in 1870 in Dublin.

Thanks
Paula

Hi Paula

Not sure what you mean? From the 1871 census entry we had, the family of William and Mary Ann/Margaret and with son George in the household. I would guess from what you have said that this is the correct family, with youngest Margaret who shows as 6 months showing on IGI as born on 19 SEP 1870 in Dublin.

The 1881 census entry I posted is for the same family, but your George was already over in Dublin married and with children by this point wasn't he? I can see on IGI that Catherine Teresa Oman was born on 12 MAY 1872 in Dublin.

Likely the name Haig/Hague, after Agnes Haig, was passed on as a middle name through the lines.

Monica  :)

Hi Monica,

Yes George is in Dublin maybe was in scotland when they did the census, He also has a daughter Mary Anne who was born in 1870. Wonder is this Margaret? is she listed as daughter or granddaughter do you know. Thanks for everything you are doing.

I think the 6 month old Margaret who showing in 1871 is daughter to William. This looks a likely entry for her birth on IGI:

MARGARET OMAN  Birth: 19 SEP 1870 Dublin
Parents: WILLIAM OMAN and MARY ANNE MURPHY

There are a couple of things you could check on original documents Paula. From www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, you would be able to check the marital status of son George, 18, who shows at home with parents in 1871. The transcript does not show marital status unfortunately.

Also, if you have the marriage date for William and Mary Ann/Margaret Murphy, you can confirm this date on the birth entry for the son Archibald who was born in 1874 in Paisley. From http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start the date of marriage shows as 4 Fe. 1850 in Dublin.

Scottish birth certs from around 1862 include the date and place of parents' marriage. William's wife, is it Mary Ann or Margaret, quite different first names, just wondered why both come up. The marriage shows as Mary Ann Murphy and birth registrations for Margaret in Dublin and Archibald in Paisly show her as Mary Ann. I am wondering whether 'Margaret' in 1871 is a mistranscription of her name, ie., Mary Ann?

Your George must have been very young when he married - c. 17 if he shows as 18 in 1871?
