Naturalizations for Yonkers, NY residents
« on: Sunday 19 September 10 22:41 BST (UK) »
Where would I look for records of naturalization if the person lived in Yonkers, NY which is Westchester county?    Would they have had to apply thru New York City?

No, they wouldn't have had to apply through New York City.  In the past, they could apply to a number of different courts (local, state, federal) for naturalization.

The Westchester County archives has an online index of naturalizations up to 1927 - http://www.westchestergov.com/wcarchives/Online_Indexes/Online_Indexes_Main.htm

You can also check the index for the Southern District of New York, which includes Westchester County - http://www.italiangen.org/databaselist.stm

Also, other helpful sites regarding naturalization:

http://www.genealogybranches.com/naturalization.html
http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/manifests/  (If you have a passenger list with manifest markings, it can help you figure out where/when the person was being naturalized.)

Thank you so much.  I'm used to doing Brooklyn and NYC but my husbands family was from Yonkers.   I appreciate your taking the time to share your knowledge!

You're welcome.  If they were in Yonkers in the mid-20th century, you might want to search the newspapers at www.fultonhistory.com

Wow, what a resource of old newspapers that is!!!!  I found things I would never think to even look for!!!!

In doing research of family that lived in South Amboy, NJ, their South Amboy Citizen issues were also scanned and are searchable.   However, it is very tedious (but not impossible for those determined to find something!) because their facility doesn't allow for a global search as the Post Card one you recommended.  You have to download each issue and then search thru the PDF file.   Their issues go from 1910 - 1944 and then 1946 - 2000.  Here is the link in case anyone has family in that area:
