Thanks, Janette.

I've accidentally blurted a milder detail on the forum already.

I'm trying to tread carefully so as not to scandalise anyone with my matter-of-fact style of communicating.

A couple of years back, there was some fuss on my father's side when a cousin's wife and I started digging into that strand. To cut a long story short, several aunties and uncles gave out false information to us because the eldest uncle was terrified we might notice he was born out of wedlock and that we might question why his mother grew up in care.

I know times have changed, but it took that incident to learn that things I'm used to talking openly about - like Lena'sstory - might be a bit confronting for some.

Thanks for the guide to messaging.

Imogen

Hi Imogen,

I've just read your posts.

We are first cousins 2 x removed as my mother was a Havard and I am descended from the youngest brother of William Davey (Alice's father).

If you would like to exchange information, you can either pm me on here, or we can exchange e-mail addresses in order to keep our mutual privacy. I understand that you may feel that I am a bit too far removed for you, but I will leave the choice with you.

Kind regards

Hello MrsD,

Thanks for your message.

Just a brief background: my younger sister J and I commenced our research a few years ago. Because of the complications surrounding Mum's parents and siblings, we decided to split the work. J looked into Mum's side and I started on Dad's side. So even though I know a fair bit about Mum's side, it's J who has the paper trail whilst most of my Havard notes are scrawled phone conversation notes and other jottings J has communicated to me.

I do know J reached a bit of a wall with William Davey's childhood in Wales, so she and I are keen to find out about his parents and siblings etc.

Thanks for posting about the Havards here!

Best regards,
Imogen

Hello Julie,

Sorry, I dropped off the radar there for longer than anticipated!

I have some basic information pertaining to Alice Rose Havard.

Born 29/06/1895 in Dunedin, New Zealand. (NZ BDM code 1895/8085.)

Married Arthur Montgomery in 1918. (NZ BDM code 1918/2301.)

Daughter Lena Montgomery born 18/03/1919. Lena was my mother's birth mother. (As Mum didn't grow up in the same household as Lena, it's a bit of a tricky part of the tree to research.)
Lena died on 27/03/1994.

Mum has always believed that Lena had a brother, possibly named Fred or Frank, but because of the NZ BDM birth search restrictions (plus the fact that I'm waiting for more time to pass before delving too deeply into Lena's life), so far I have only come across a Frank Montgomery who died at age two with code 1926/5735.

As for Alice Rose, she lived for a time at a place named Rose Cottage, in Caversham, Dunedin.
She died at Cherry Farm Hospital in 1968.

These are the absolute basics, I must say! I hope to eventually compile a more comprehensive profile sourced from official sources, but am limited as to what I can do for the time being.

I hope this is a good start. :)

Kind wishes,
Imogen

Hello again, Julie!

I have recently realised that there were two kinswomen named Maggie Sisera Havard.

The elder Maggie Sisera was born in 1892 (NZ BDM code 1892/4331) and died in 1911 at age 19 (NZ BDM code 1911/8815) as per the information provided further up this thread.

However, I have found an additional birth record, which has since become available with the passing of time. NZ BDM birth code 1911/14639: Baby Margaret Sisera Havard born to mother Margaret Sisera. Father not recorded.

Younger Maggie married George Staples. (NZ BDM code 1932/7100.)

Kind wishes,
Imogen

Hi Janette,

I've recently started researching the Havard family tree.
Fred Davies Havard and Mary Elizabeth Cubitt are my great great grandparents.

I was very interested to read this forum topic and I see that you mentioned Fred Davies Havard in your message on the 1st of January 2011 under 'their marriages'.

I may have missed something but is he a son of William Davey and Elizabeth Havard?

Thanks,
Jess

Hi Jess,

I've just been notified about your post. (I started this thread a while ago.)

Fred Davies was the son of William Havard & Sarah Davies, born in 1868 at the family farm, Penwern Farm, Boughrood, Radnorshire, Wales. He emigrated in 1888 & married Mary in 1897. They went on to have 6 known children, including your ggrandparent. William Davey was one of Fred's older brothers.

I am descended through Fred's youngest brother, George, making him my gguncle.

If you want any more help with the older Havards, please feel free to send me a private message.

Best wishes
