Suicide around 1900 re Henry George Standley
« on: Friday 17 September 10 18:18 BST (UK) »
I'm still at a brick wall as to what happened to and how my Great Grandfather Henry George Standley born 1852 in Roudham, Wymondham died. Therefore, I am now considering whether he committed suicide. Does anyone know if a person committing suicide around the 1900 would still have a death certificate?   ???

Hi
I would have thought that every death has a death certificate and at that date, What area did he die you have only given his place of birth?

I can only assume he died just prior to 1901 as his estranged wife was classed as widowed on the 1901 census and prior to that he was still fathering children.  The thought of suicide occurred to me as I have just finished reading an article in Practical Family History about suicide.  The author concludes by saying 'if one of your ancestors 'disappears' from the records, it's worthwhile considering the possibility of suicide..'. I can only find census returns for 1861 and 1871.  I have a marriage certificate but he left his wife and she remained in Louth workhouse for 20 years.  However he must have had some contact as he fathered 4 of her children during this time!! He has been so elusive, I think I'm jsut clutching at straws now!

I can only assume he died just prior to 1901 as his estranged wife was classed as widowed on the 1901 census

Estranged and deserted wives often reported themselves as widows in the census as a face-saver - I wouldn't conclude from that alone that he was definitely dead.

Would agree the info given on census returns is only as accurate as the person giving the info wants it to be.

The later children may have been fathered by someone else??

I'd go back to a census when they are actually enumerated together on census night and inch forward from that.
