How do you know that's the right Michael Daly ?

Shane

You don't!  It is a possible.
I'm not young enough to know everything.

There are numerous possibilities on the free website at www.irishgenealogy.ie

e.g.

Michl. Daly, 1822, Rathfarnham, RC, Dublin
Michl. Daly, 21 Feb 1822, Kilbrittain RC, Cork
Michl. Daly, 9 Mar 1822, Kilbrittain RC, Cork
Michl. Daly, 27 Oct 1822, Clonakilty RC Cork
Michl. Daly  12 April 1823, Kilbrittain RC, Cork
Michael Daly, 28 Sept 1823, Listowel RC Kerry
 ..etc

It's no problem finding records for a Michael Daly born between the years mentioned - the issue is finding the right one..

I understood that to be a possible place of birth rather than something definitive ?

Of the three census returns I have found (1861, 1891 and 1901), the first and last have Michael born in "Ireland"; the 1891 however states "Roscommon". For Mary his wife, the 1851 census has her born Cork, Ireland.

I do note that on William's marriage certificates his father is always Michael John Daley; and one of the census returns has his wife as Mary Ann Daley, so I might be able to narrow things down a little by use of these middle names!

PS thanks to all for your support.

Middle names are not always mentioned on parish records - so that detail may or may not help, but it might be worth checking that baptism record that snowyw mentioned to see ..

Records for part of Co. Cork (RC records for the south western part of the county and city) are available on the IrishGenealogy website.
