tracing roots
« on: Thursday 16 September 10 19:59 BST (UK) »
hi every one, i just started this site to day and wondered if anyone out there can help me to trace my fathers unown family.his mother was born in yorkshire & her name was maud mabella roberts(nee watters). she was born1892 - her mothers name was Mary Ellen. & her fathers John Thomas Watters. Maud married an army chaplain named Leonard Roberts from hereford in 1916 who was killed in france during the 1st world war about 1816/17. she travelled to northumberland in 1917 for a holiday and met a soldier who was a sgt or captain who was based there at that time, named ? lippett and they began a relationship resulting in the birth of my father. Lippett deserted maud during her pregnancy & she remained in northumberland untill my father was born -then retuned to hereford after registering my father in her married surname name of Roberts(1st name(william)"-saying she would return later." she never did as she could not "face the discrace alone" she then later met a man from shrewsbury named ? Wills(maried&seperated from his wife) & set up home with him about 1925 -they had a little girl name (not known) this person could still be alive or have family,so please if u know anything  about this family could u post,me a personal message.many thanks.

Welcome to Rootschat. If I am reading your post correctly Maud Mabella Walters from Hereford was born 1882 (mother's name Ellen) and married a man Roberts (chaplain?- who was killed c1914/1916). Then in 1917 Maud met a soldier named Lippett in Northumberland area and deserted by him after becoming pregnant (son registered under surname of Roberts). Later (c1925) had a daughter by another man.
First of all, Rootschat isn't a forum for tracing living relatives and since the daughter could still be alive we cannot post any details about her here. When members have 3 posts they can use PM (personal message) system to make contact and exchange email address, recent family details, etc.
Illegitimate children are registere under mother's current surname so that's why your father was listed as Roberts rather than Maud's maiden name.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hello and welcome!  :)

I can't find a birth for Maud in Hereford at the time you say - what paperwork do you have so far?  Her marriage certificate would come in handy but I can't find a record of that either ...

Kind regards, Arranroots

Kia ora,

As I said in the chat room I think we are looking for Maud Mabella Watters born in 1892, Yorkshire who subsequently moved to Herefordshire with her parents Mary Ellen and John Thomas.  The later birth makes it much more plausible her having a child in 1925 ish.

As you know we believe we have found the family in 1891 and 1901, and the marriage cert should confirm the details you now have from those census

This is the marriage

Maud M Watters to Leonard Roberts  Apr-May-Jun 1916  in Weobley,  Herefordshire
Volume No: 6 a
Page No:    1149

If you order that certificate it will give you more details on the family and we can go from there.  Good luck

Kia ora

Just in case you didn't get it, this is what I believe to be her birth

Year of Reg: 1892
1/4 of Reg:    Apr-May-Jun
District:    Bedale
