1851 Census Tonbridge JOY family
« on: Wednesday 06 April 05 17:30 BST (UK) »
In 1841 I have the following JOY family in High Street Tonbridge.

William 45 Plumber
Ann 40
Caroline 20
Elizabeth 10
Stephen 8
Frederick 6

William was born in Brenchley (bap1797)  Caroline married in 1841 and I have found her and her husband in the 1861 census.  I can't find the others in 1861 on 1837online - they may be mis-transcribed or the older ones may have died.

If anyone can find them in Tonbridge High Street for me in 1851 I would be very grateful.

Hi Barbara

I will be going to Tonbridge reference library early next week, so will have a look for you on the 1851 census.

Hi Barbara

I found the following in the 1851 census:

William Joy  Head   M   53   Plumber   K.Brenchley
Ann Joy       Wife    M   54                   K.Maidstone
William         Son    U   21                   K.Tonbridge
Elizabeth     Daug  U   23                   K.Tonbridge
Frederick      Son    U   18                  K.Tonbridge

All living at Priory Terrace, (which was part of Tonbridge town on the eastern side of the High Street, between the Lower Bridge and Brook Street Lane)

Ref:  HO.107/1615 - page 32

I also came across another JOY family where the father was also born at Brenchley so didn't know if they were too do with your family tree so have included them as well.

Henry Joy   Head   M   31  ?ra??er           K.Brenchley
Mary Joy     Wife    M   31  ?ra??er Wife   K.Wrotham
Henry         Son     U     4   Scholar           K.Tonbridge
Benjamin Thorne   Lodger   U   23   Coachman   K.Tonbridge
Mary Steel   Serv.   U   10   House Servant   K.Tonbridge

All living at 55 High Street, Booking Office.  (This would have been over the road from William and his family)

Ref: HO.107/1615 - page 15

Hope this gives you the information you was seeking.

Thank you very much for both of the extracts.  I now know who was alive in 1851 so can  search for deaths or marriages as well as continuing to try to track them down in 1861.

I think Henry is one of mine.  I collect anything on Brenchley Joys as I am hoping to join up all of the families eventually ;D

Thank you for that.

Which families are you researching?  I have quite a few pages of  census extracts for Brenchley and am quite happy to look for your names - you may be lucky!

I have pages containing Joy families for all the censuses from 1841 - 1891.

Hi Barbara

The families I am researching from Brenchley are Saunders, Outteridge and Jeffery.  I have the census extracts for the above and have been ploughing through the parish records for b.m.d.  I will also be going to the County Records in Maidstone during the next few months to look at the Parish Chest.
So may find some Joy's while I am looking for mine.

Thank you.  Will keep a look out for your names as well when I do some more Brenchley research.  I have all the PR records relating to Brenchley Joys up to 1900 so my next areas of research are the Parish Chest and wills.
