Any more info on him, dates, children, occupation - was he still alive in 1901 and 1911?

he's gone to ireland after 1871. Back in scotland 1889ish with wife/partner helen and two daughters ethel and alice. they go on to have helen about 1894, then two boys james ( my grandfather ) and thomas born in ayr 1897 and 1899.

If he only stayed in Ireland a few years it will probably be difficult to find any information. First available census is 1901. Were any of the children born in Ireland? If so you can search for their birth registrations in the civil index (free)-

Ireland was part of the U.K. and no records were kept of people travelling between Ireland and Scotland, England and Wales.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

From your second post I presume you have found him in 1871 UK Census and found him again in 1891. So far you haven't found him in 1881 and have reason to believe he was in Ireland during this time. Maybe birthplace Ireland for some of his children?

If you can give a bit more detail here I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

Dara.
