Caulfields/Horans of Carrownlacka Kilmovee Mayo
« on: Wednesday 15 September 10 12:51 BST (UK) »
I have a Hugh Caulfield father of Margaret Caulfield and Michael Caulfield all of Carrownlacka.  Margaret married a Martin Tuohy/Towey and Michael married a Bridget Horan both married 1867.  I can't find out who Hugh married or when he died or anything about him his wife or his son Michael and Michael's wife etc

Dp you have Margaret or Michael's marriage certificates? they should give father's occupation (and sometimes will say if deceased).
If you know the family's religion you should be searching for church records (if they survive) to see if any of the family are listed in the register.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi

I do have Margaret and Michael Caulfield's marriage certs but they don't say if Hugh was deceased.  On the certs it says Hugh was a labourer but on the griffiths valuation a Hugh Caulfield is down as a landowner or tenent.  I don't know how to get parish records.

Hi Eva
Carrownlacka (or Carrownalecka) will come under Ballinrobe RC Parish Church. Unfortunately about 5 years of records approx 1855-60 were lost in a church fire - an annoying gap.

Hi Nell

Thanks for the information.  Both Margaret and Michael were married in Kilmovee RC chapel.  Shame about the lost records.  What I would like to know is how I would go about getting any parish records - do I write to Kilmovee parish church or Ballinrobe parish church? OR?

Hi there
The Church of the Latter Day Saints holds many parish records on microfilm in its family history centres. Worth checking if there is one near you.

I have looked at the Ballinrobe records at the LDS centre in London and they are difficult to read. The National Library in Dublin also holds parish records on microfilm. There are also various online resources eg Irish Family History Foundation and Mayo Ancestors but you probably know about these already. They're good but expensive. Good luck!

Hello Eva,

Most, if not all, of the Kilmovee parish records are available here:

http://www.eastmayo.org/

However, your problem may be that there are no records for your specific period of interest.

The Kilmovee registers cover these periods:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/09t5/

Hope this helps,

Justin

Hi Justin

Thanks for your reply.  I've had a quick look (as off out in a minute) at Eastmayo and Rootschat and they look promising.

I am looking for Hugh's marriage and his children's births so they may well be in the periods down as available.

Thaanks again

Eva
