WRIGHT family from Longtown & Kirkandrews on Esk
« on: Wednesday 15 September 10 09:51 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on the WRIGHT family who lived in Kirkandrews on Esk and then Longtown since the 17th Century. Perhaps there are still some Wrights living in Longtown?

Dear Sybella2.Just seen your bit . Some time ago I was off on a false trail for a Margaret Wright born 1782 and found two in Kirkandrews on Esk. They turned out not mine but in the meantime I got some info. on Wrights in that parish.

All the info is from Carlisle RO or the library. I have copies of memorial inscriptions in the parish church with about 35 Wrights mentioned and lots of addresses etc.
I followed one supposed ancestor back and found he was from Henrystown which was inundated in the Solway Moss flood of 1771 and a copy of a map of 1774 showing the flooded area. I think I got the map from the public library.

I can send this stuff by post if you want it. Its about ten sheets of quarto and a few photos. When I was in Longton I was told that a Mr. Graham who had a hardware store on the main street was a mine of info. on local history.
Hope this helps. If anyone else could use the stuff they are welcome to it if Sybella2 doesn't want it.

Dear Humphpaul,

Many thanks for your message. It's the first response I've had.
I have quite a lot of information from the Carlisle Archives and the church inscriptions but the problem is that there are so many Wrights that it would be very easy to attach myself to the wrong family, as you seem to have discovered, too.
My reasons for pursuing the family history are that my mother was told by her grandfather and he by his father, etc. that the family was descended from the Gunpowder Plot Wrights. My mother is now aged 104, so can hardly remember anything at all, let alone family history tales.
Unfortunately, I cannot link the Longtown/Kirkandrews on Esk Wrights to the Yorkshire Wrights in the 17th Century, who were the plotters. This is mainly because they were such a prolific lot so following family lines backwards has proved difficult earlier than about 1800 and it is unreliable to try to follow forwards from the Holderness Wrights.
So I have sort of come to a standstill, but I will certainly follow up your lead with the hardware store gentleman. I don't think the documents are what I'm looking for, although Henrystown has come up. "My" Wrights came from nearby Pattenstown, i.e. "Jock O' Pattenstown".
Best wishes,  Sybella2

Dear Sybella2
You certainly have a big job going back that far. I am stuck around 1740 and anything before is just guesswork. I eventually found my Wrights in the Wigton area.
In MIs is one mention of Pattenstown on grave 153." In memory of Mary wife of George Graham of Pattenstown died 9/3/1853 age 65. George died 16/9/1856 age 72"
Patton Town is shown on the 1774 map as near the northern edge of the flooded area near Browhead and Peat Hill.
I noticed a couple of Sybellas in the MIs - a Turnbull and a Graham. The people there did have some out of the ordinary names for girls didn't they.
Anyway, good hunting. Alan
