Robert Cumming & Annie MacRae - Calgary, Alberta, Canada
« on: Tuesday 14 September 10 16:58 BST (UK) »
I’m looking for descendants of Robert Cumming & Annie MacRae.

Robert Cumming was born on 15th February 1884 at Boreland, Hutton & Corrie Parish, Dumfriesshire; son of Janet Cumming. On 1st January 1889 Janet Cumming married Robert Gordon; however Robert Cumming was raised by his grandfather & step-grandmother.

On 28th June 1905 he married Annie MacRae at the Alexandra Hotel, New Walk, Inverness.

Annie MacRae is the daughter of Duncan MacRae & Jemima Cameron.

Robert & Annie had the following family:

Robert Gordon Cumming was born on 22nd April 1906 at 15 Newlands Terrace, Cathcart, Renfrewshire.

Jemima Cameron Cumming was born on 3rd August 1907 at 4 Greenholme Street, Cathcart, Renfrewshire.

Janet Cumming was born in 1911 or 1912 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Grace Cumming was born in 1915 or 1916 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Robert & Annie Cumming arrived with Robert jnr & Jemima in Quebec from Glasgow aboard the Cassandra on 9th June 1909.

Robert was killed at Vimy Ridge, France on 9th April 1917. His home address was 2421, 24A St., Glengarry, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Any help would be very much appreciated. I have additional information that I’m happy to share.

Regards.

Ian

There's a Robert G. listed with dates 1906-1963 here, buried Calgary.  If you could track down his death and obituary that would be the easiest way I think to get in touch with relatives.

http://sites.google.com/site/onlinedirectorysite/Home/can/ab/calgary
 - lots of Calgary directories listed here. e.g. in 1920 it looks like Annie is still at the same address:

and by 1930 Janet and Robert are listed separately (but still at the same address as their mother)

Hello Nuspy.

While searching for information about your Robert Cumming in Calgary I came across a blog entry titled Remembrance Day 2009 Calgary.

Robert's name was one of two soldiers on the page and if you click on his name it opens a new window with 7 pages of information including pictures of a stained glass memorial at a church in Calgary, a picture of the house at the address given on his Attestation Papers, the Attestation Papers, burial information. a picture of the cemetery .... but best of all there are copies of pages from the War Diary for his unit for April 9 -10, 1917.  These pages are from the day he died so should be interesting reading.  I hate to admit I didn't read them (it's very late here) but I certainly will tomorrow.

I don't believe the blogger is in anyway related to Robert.  If you go back to the original page with his name on it and click on "why" in the upper right hand corner he explains why he sought out the information.

Happy reading and I hope this isn't information you have seen before.

You will find the information at:  http://mattremembers.ca/?m=200911

Scarboro United Church Calgary

This is the church where the stained glass window is in memory. If the family belonged to this church, living relatives still might belong.

Awe that is so nice of him to commemorate these men isn't it ?

a Robert Gordon Cumming is interred here ( Queen's Park Cemetery, Calgary) may or may not  be yours
http://www.afhs.ab.ca/data/crematorium/crem2_cl.html
sorry now see this is the same site as given by jorose, from another section...
Queens Park also has an Annie Edna McRae  1886-1980  In case she was buried under her maiden name ( this is found in may local cemeteries )

They family was in Manitoba for the 1916 census...Must have joined him as he signed up in Calgary but with a Manitoba division...

The McRae family has him listed on their monument...along with a McCrae
http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/scottishwargraves-post-13403.html
and I imagine the piece was taken from the canada Remembers site, where it must be the grandparents who were listed as the parents....and rightly so, since they raised the lad...
