to this my last will and testament I have sett my sett my seale and hand the day and year

I think it should read:
to this my last will and testament I have sett my seale and hand the day and year

I think the clerk wrote "sett my sett my" twice.

Thanks Bridget, I did wonder whether it was a mistake.  Thanks very much for all your help, it's much appreciated.

Koromo, thanks for your help on the last part of the Will - I have tried Goodling the words you suggested but only get 2 items and not 6 pages - I will keep trying with alternative words!

Hi Sally

Perhaps I didn't get the "Google" link right in my post, but it doesn't matter because I copied and pasted the relevant bits (above).

If you Google on just Probatum fuit Testamentu coram you'll get more results — they don't all use the same form of the word huioi.

:)

Afraid I know very little about my uncle, and I believe my cousin knows about the same. By the way, though I have not yet attempted the transcription of parts 4 and 5, I have discovered the following from Pishey Thompson's 1856 "History of Boston"
A Sir William Tupholm died in 1530,he was Parson of Waydingham and Chauntry Priest of Dockdyke (sic); John Tupholm was elected Alderman of the Borough in 1545, and was Mayor in 1547. For a tax levied by Henry VIII in 1547 his goods were valued at £100.From the time line I would imagine that this William was a grandson of Sir William, and the son or nephew of John, the former Mayor of Boston. Have you checked the Boston Parish registers?

Koromo & Redroger

Sorry I didn't get round to thanking you both for your posts - been away for a few days!

Redroger - thanks for the information on Sir William Tupholme - very interesting.

I need a little time to refresh myself of where I was up to before I was away.

Thanks again
Sally

Sorry I haven't had chance to complete pages 5 and 6 yet, but when I do, I will post on this thread. It might be worthwhile getting in touch with Boston Council, as I believe their records on the early mayors etc. are quite extensive. By the way, when he refers to leaving the glass from the house in his will, this is quite likely as glazed windows were a very new thing in domestic dwellings then, and the glass was often p[assed down. He seems tro have been quite wealthy.

Hi Redrodger

I've just done a quick search on Tupholmes' of Boston and came across the attached....

Do you think I have I read it right?

John Tupholme (mayor of Boston 1547)
John’s sister - Jenett Stutt and her daughters Jennet and Margaret
John’s sister – Agnes Coocke and her daughter Eliz
John’s sister – Margaret Fisher
?  Gregori Tupholme and his son Thomas
John’s sister – Margaret Forman
John’s sister – Higdon
? Thomas and Richard Ffayefax and their Uncle Mayesh
? Wives children – viz, George Fayerfax, Humfrey Fayerfax, Thomas Fairfax and Richard Fairfax
John’s son – William Tupholme and wife Frances, their son Nicholas
John’s wife Agnes and her sister Batte, brother John Bradley
Executors – John Bradley and Thomas Palfreman

Is Gregori the son of John? And Thomas the son of John or Gregori?

Who are Thomas & Richard Ffayefax related to?

Wives children – is this John’s first wife??

The only honest answer is I don't know. However, I am going to London on Wednesday and Thursdasy. This should give me ample time to both complete parts 5 and 6 of the will, and play with some trees based on this. Should be interesting! Strangely, I most likely went to the same school as these men, only over 400 years later. Boston Grammar School founded c1323. Will look into that too. Roger
