FLINN, Blackaderry
« on: Friday 05 February 10 13:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I would be so appreciative if someone can help me!

I am trying to find information about Daniel Flinn who married Alice (Ally) Bannon.   The birth date for both is abt 1816.  They moved from County Down to the Isle of Man prior to 1851 as they are listed on IOM census for that year.  Both state their birth place as County Down and their oldest daughter, Alice, (aged 8 in 1851) was born in County Down.  He was a cattle dealer.   There is also a John Flinn listed (a pig dealer) who hailed from Ireland (no specific loction) not sure if he is a cousin/brother - although his children, Bridget and Michael were god parents to one of Daniel's grandchildren.

Any help pointing me in the right direction to dig deeper would be much appreciated (they were incidentally catholics)

Many many thanks for any suggestions.
Trudie

Trudie,
Unfortunately Civil Registration of Catholic marriages only started in 1864 in Ireland. Before that we have to depend on church records, where these exist. For that we would need to know exactly where in County Down the couple lived before marriage.

Hi kingskerswell

Thanks for that, I have no other information although I hope to visit NI around November (finances permitting) and am not sure where to start looking.   At least you have confirmed it isn't going to be easy.

Thanks again

Trudie

Backaderry Flinns

Hi

Can anyone help with the Flinns who I believe came from Backaderry (if the entry on the 1911 IOM census is to be believed) and moved to the Isle of Man. Certainly the family came from County Down. I have Hugo born c 1785 married to Susanna, son Daniel (c1816) married to Alice Bannon (c1813). There was possibly another son John married to Bridget. Daniel and Alice's oldest daughter (also Alice) was born in Ireland c1842 but the other children were all born in the Isle of Man.

Any suggestions on how I can get further information would be appreciated - at the moment I am not able to visit Down.

Many thanks
Trudles

Trudles,

Backaderry is in the RC parish of Upper Drumgooland, (near Castlewellan). I think that the parish church would be the Church of Immaculate Conception at Leitrim. You could contact the PP to see what birth and marriage records exist for the period you are interested in. You can also check on the PRONI website, as they may have copies, but a personal visit is required to inspect them, and PRONI is closed until April 2011 pending a move of premises.
