Thanks for the census record links, I have reviewed these previously, but I have not been able to find a birth, baptism or marriage record for either William  or Mary.

If the 1911 census return is accurate then their marriage was in about 1861 - so before the start of civil registration for RC marriages, which means you would have to search for parish records for the marriage and their baptisms.

Their ages are a little inconsistent between the 1901 and 1911 census returns, so ages and years married could be a little bit inaccurate..

If the couple were married in Westport then the RC parish to check for is Aughaval - sometimes noted as Oughavall, or 'Aughaval, Westport & Lecanvey'. Marriage records for the parish go back to the early 1820s, baptisms go back to 1845.

Many thanks for this info, I had not realised that the Irish civil registration were not in place in 1861. I wrongly assumed it started the same time as the UK civil registrations in 1837.

I had assumed this period for the marriage, since the first child was born in 1862, so that ties in quite well. The local parish church is St Mary's I believe. This gives me something to follow up.

Many thanks

Tom

Non-Catholic marriage registration started earlier in 1845, but RC marriage and registration of Births and Deaths started here in 1864

see : Introduction to Irish Records

update : I fixed a typo above - I had the wrong date for the start of non-RC marriages

Thanks, This is the Grave William Gunning, The Father of William was also called William and he married Kate, he  was killed in a boiler explosion in Dublin in 1910 leaving Kate his wife with 3 small children. They moved back to Westport to her family home. Thanks for pointing out the photo.

Regards

Tom
