Kelly Family
« on: Monday 13 September 10 20:48 BST (UK) »
Hi, hopefully someone can help or guide me to the right records to look at.  I am looking to find the full details of a family from County Mayo - this is all the information I have:
John Kelly b. 1876 Westport, County Mayo - he is on the UK 1901 census in Haltwhistle Northumberland.  His father was called Thomas Kelly.  I don't know his mothers name, but he had two sisters (called Catherine and Anna) and 3 brothers (names unknown).  His mother, sisters and brothers moved to New York, but I don't know when exactly though the family story is they went to the USA and he went to England so I am assuming in the 1890s.  I am trying to find his mothers name if anyone can help me ?  The Irish census's don't seem very complete!

Thanks
Victoria

PS - also what is the best (ideally free) migration site to use to find out when they went to the USA ? I would like to search for all of them as a family but so far I can only find sites that let me search one person at a time.

The most likely port of arrival is New York. See www.ellisisland.org for passenger records 1892-1924 and if it is pre-1892 then look at www.castlegarden.org (both free sites). However, passenger records for 1890s usually have little details- name, age, occupation, country of origin.

Added- you will have to search for 1 person at a time but you can view the manifests and hopefully the family will be listed together.

Hi Victoria

John Kelly Westport birth 1876 drawing a blank.

Taking a John born 1876 to a Thomas with sisters Catherine and Anna/Anne as absolutes the LDS site turns up :-

John birth December 11 1876
Catherine birth May 10 1875
Anne Birth December 4 1873
Parents Thomas Kelly and Mary Meehan.
No other births attributed, though others may have occured without parents details being transcribed.

Place of Birth Lisballaly,Gurteen,Sligo.
A Thomas Kelly appears in the Griff Valuations Barony:Coolavin,Union:Boyle,Parish:Kilfree,Townland:Lisbaleely. Landlord:Lord De Freyne.
With all the upheavals in the late 19th C many families gravitated to the larger towns which may be a possibility here as no 1901  census details are evident for this family.

Hope the above may be of some help.

Hi Victoria again,

Just had a peak at some of your other posts and note the year of 1876 for Johns birth may be a bit shaky.

Another alternative for you could be Catherine Cosgriff/Cosgrave/Cosgrove all the same person but variant spellings.

John birth Feb 18 1878
Catherine birth June 9 1864
Anne birth Aug 18 1879
Ellen birth Sep 28 1866
Michael birth Aug 19 1874
Thomas birth May 7 1871

You've got one extra sister and one less brother .Birth area Cuiltybo, Mayo,Clanmorris, not a million miles from Westport,  which may fall in line with Kiltimagh suggested on another thread.

Hi Padraig3

Thanks for having a look.  The original family you mention might be who I am looking for as according to the Ellis.org ship manifest, I believe John Kelly was going to his mothers and she is down as Mary Anne Kelly....possible Mary Meehan?.  I will need to have another more detailed look.  I have a feeling however the other children were born later than John and not earlier, but again need to look again at it.  I am also guessing (and need to look up) but that Sligo isn't near Mayo ??  Appreciate the time you have spent looking and helping though...one of those family history challenges ;-0

Thanks
Victoria

Hi I am also interested in the Kelly Family from Westport, Co Mayo. I have a William Kelly born around 1848 and his wife Mary Malley based on the 1901 and 1911 Census records. The lived for a time on Castlebar street and then later on the FairGreen. William was involved in 1915 in the funeral car business and a pub. The had a number of children which I know about but no other details. Any added info would be much appreciated.

To add a bit more detail, William and Mary had a lot of Children, approx. 11, I believe, the were

John b. 1862
Elizabeth b.1866
Edward b. 1870
Thomas b. 1722 d. 1872
Mary Ellen b. 1874 m. 1896 John Wilson
Margaret b. 1876
Catherine (Kate) b. 1878 m. 1904 William Gunning
Grace & Alfred b. 1880, Alfred d. 1881
Thomas b. 1883
Martin b. 1886

Son Edward (Ned) took over Funeral car Business after 1915 as William is mentioned at the bottom of this article in 1915 :-
