Grave in St.Cuthbert's RC Church, Crook, Durham
« on: Monday 13 September 10 14:05 BST (UK) »
I'm coming up to the City of Durham in a couple of weeks, and am reciprocating research done for me in the States. My researcher would like me to find the grave of Patrick Trainor (various spellings) who died on June 16 1885 and is buried in the churchyard of St.Cuthbert's Roman Catholic church, Crook.
Does anyone know of a plan of the graves there, so that I can save myself time? I hope to visit the churchyard on Sunday 3rd Oct on my way back down to Southampton.
Thankyou

Hello. I may save you a journey because there is not a gravestone for Trainor  (or variations) in the churchyard.
Just google M inscriptions for Crook Catholic church and you will see a list of names that I have indexed for that church.

There is indeed a burial for a Patrick Trainor who was buried 16/June/1885 aged 38 years and who was from Howden le Wear (so Crook is the correct place for him to be buried)

There are 5 burials for Trainor at Crook and 2 burials for Traynor. The priest who did the burials and who made the entries in the register was Augustus Pippet and he his the one who spelt the names differently. But once again there are no gravestones for Trainor.

Adam, many thanks for your informative reply! I will contact my American lady to see what she says. I've been unable to find your list of names with Google - I'll have another go tomorrow. I did get in touch with The North....and Durham FHS and they could only find one Trainor - Thomas died at 21 19 Feb 1875 in the inscriptions. If there is no grave for Patrick, would there be a burial plan somewhere?
Thanks, Llinos

Wheldon, I think this is the list Adam has referred to http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,314997.0.html

I'm afraid there was no plan of the graves in the churchyard for that period. I wish there was, my great-grandmother Rose Keenan nee Martin was buried there in 1873 and several of her children before that but as her death wasn't registered, the burial register is the only record I have of her death but where she is buried, I will never know.

Good luck,
J.T.A.

It may interest you but the guy who plays the organ at the church here. (Roger Kelly) is the Great Great Grandson of a Patrick Traynor born in 1828 in Ireland. I play the bells their and the old section of grave yard is missing the plans unfortunately. It is disappointing as I have relations in it aswell. I notice someone mentioned Rose Keenan (Nee Martin). My Great Great Grandfather was from County Antrim called Felix Martin.
