Hi Cari's Mother in Law,

Would the Thomas Coupland you are struggling to find in 1871 and 1881 be the father of John Richard :
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,214100.msg3393144.html#msg3393144The reason I ask, in 1901 he gave his birthplace as Kirkheaton - but on a later census, he claimed to have been born in Brotherton.
In 1861, there is a one year old Thomas Copeland, living in Brotherton with his parents William - occupation Captain and Mary A. According to FreeBMD there wasn't anyone of this name born in the Pontefract registration district during the right period, but there is a Thomas Coupland.
In 1851 the above couple are definitely named Coupland.
This leads me to the following reference in 1881, residence Kirkheaton - Thomas Copeland, age 21 - born Brotherton, but listed as Rotherham, living with his parents William and Mary A.

These are all the same families, but see what you think anyway !

Kind regards,
Pels.
