SWEDEN-Carl Julius Olsson and Maria Louise Nilson (Nelson)
« on: Saturday 11 September 10 13:02 BST (UK) »
I am new to searching on my Swedish side and have been having a hard time finding information online for my great great grandparents.

Carl Julius Olsson (b. 12/1869 SWEDEN)
Maria Louise (Louisa) Nilson (Nelson) (b. 9/2/1867 SWEDEN)

Both Carl and Maria show up on the 1900 US Census in Worcester, MA. Carl emigrated in 1884. They have 4 children: Carl Julius Axel, Arthur Victor, Walter Clarence (great grandfather), and Violet Louise.

Any information would be great.

Craig

There's a Danish online passenger database which shows over 3,000 Olsson's departed from that country and I see from the first entries I looked at that most came from Sverige (Sweden).   Here is the search page:

http://www.emiarch.dk/search.php3?l=en

You need to read the Information page (see tab at top of that page)  to discover whether towns of origin were recorded in the time span you're searching.

It might help if you can find their marriage presumably in the States to find out their father's names as this will help locate them in Sweden as both their names are not uncommon. Have you used pilot family search? http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home. However it is not necessarily complete. There is a Carl Julius Olsson born 22 Dec 1869 in Brakne-Hoby, Blekinge, Sweden to parents Mathias Olsen and Mathilda Carlsdatter.

Have you looked at this thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,481569.0.html

I've more experience in looking Norwegian records, but I've always found it helpful to use the Norwegian forums to ask for help. I think there are Swedish equivalents.

Rena, Thank you. I have bookmarked the site for future use. I found the 3000+ Olsson's but upon narrowing the search criteria there were no matches. Though the information I currently have may be inaccurate it is all I have to go on for now.

Kaysii, Thank you very much. The Carl Julius you found could very well be the one I am looking for. The new Family Search is  an improvement. I much prefer easy to navigate and intuitive interfaces. I have also bookmarked the thread you mentioned and will follow through with that.

Hi Craig

If you haven't tried it yet, "Genforum" (Swedish section) has a lot of enthusiastic helpers, who may be able to locate emigration details.

"Genline", a pay site, carries a large portion of Swedens BMD records. The site details the extent of their records in terms of Counties & Parishes. These are based on the LDS Church films.

Cheers, Les

Les, Thank you. I plan on checking out GenForum over the weekend. I'm not deep enough in to join the pay sites as of yet. But I'm sure I will at some point.

Further research has uncovered that Carl's parents are Olaf Magnusson and Sophie (maiden name unknown). Olaf was born 10/28/1838 in Nor, Varmland, Sweden. Olaf's parents were Magnus Mansson and Stina Olofsdotter.

Maria/Murial Nilson/Nilsdotter was born in Edsvalla, Nor, Sweden and her parents are Nils Svenson and Louisa (maiden name unknown)

Carl emigrated in 1884 from Karlstad (#0871884025). I plan on getting to the local library and accessing Genline at some point but if anyone is looking for something to do...

I plan on researching more into both Carl and Maria's ancestors while trying to understand the naming convention of the locations in Sweden.

Good to hear you have been able to progress. Did you manage to get your information when the Swedish digital archives had a free access offer  for last weekend? http://www.arkivdigital.net/

It is worth looking at these sites from time to time to find out when they have a freebie like this.
