Hi Clarkey

referring back to the beginning of the topic, Peter has access to the Times Archive with his library card so should be able to find the entry now. At the time of the original post the Times online only went upto the 1980's if I remember correctly.

You are welcome to post a transcription.

It was new information, (to me,) that libraries subscribe to The Times Digital Archive, so today I made an enquiry at my local library in beautiful Torbay, Devon.

I was told that the decision was taken very recently to allow the licence to lapse at the end of this financial year because it costs several thousand pounds, and the public use it so rarely the cost is not warranted.  :'(

I shall search it before the end of March, before the opportunity disappears. Be warned.......

But I do wonder,  what else might be available to search at the library of which I am completely unaware?

BORCHARDT in Poland/Germany, BOSKOWITZ in Czechoslovakia, Hungary + Austria, BUSS in Baden, Germany + Switzerland, FEKETE in Hungary + Austria, GOTTHILF in Hammerstein + Berlin, GUBLER, GYSI, LABHARDT & RYCHNER in Switzerland, KONIG & KRONER in Germany, PLACZEK, WUNSCH & SILBERBERG in Poland.

Also: ROWSE in Brixham, Tenby, Hull & Ramsgate. Strongman, in Falmouth. Champion. Coke. Eame/s. Gibbons. Passmore. Pulsever. Sparkes in Brixham & Ramsgate. Toms in Cornwall. Waymoth. Wyatt.

If you're asking about your local Torbay library service then according to their website, not much sadly

http://www.torbay.gov.uk/libraries/local-studies/http://www.torbay.gov.uk/libraries/local-studies/

Devon library services has a bit more

http://www.devon.gov.uk/index/cultureheritage/libraries/info/onlinereference.htm

you might have to ask if this leaflet is upto date

Thanks Dawn.
There is a marvellous local studies library at Torquay which has lots of film and fiche. That is where I did the bulk of my early family history research before it was "all" on-line. Years ago one of the staff started an index of people, but I don't know how that progressed..... it might be worth asking if it still exists.

The local studies library at Exeter was really big and holds interest for much of South Devon I know.  It has now been moved from the centre of Exeter to the Records Office building at Sowton.

So many people are not aware that Ancestry is available free at the library...... well obviously it won't get used if people don't know it is there!
