Adoption of my Nan

I am hoping someone can help me please.

My nan was adopted in London, via an advert in a newspaper, so her adoption is not listed anywhere. I know her birth name was Joyce Huxly or Huxley, she was born on the 25th September 1919, we were given to believe she was born in Fulham, but we are not sure that is for correct.

I don't want to speak to the family, would just like to trace the family tree on my nans side.

Hi, i have her date of birth from her death certificate and also that was what she was told by her adoptive parents, who were told by her parents. Hope that makes sense.

do you know who her adoptive parents were ? also nearest i could find is parence j huxley  brentford jul-sep mothers surname barnes vol 3a  p295 not a lot of good i know but with a first name like thatmight well get dropped ( can i climb out of this hole i,m digging now )

I suppose you know that Prior to 1927 there was no formal adoption process, and the term "adopted" generally included fostering and guardianship. In many instances a child was simply "adopted" into the extended family or taken in by neighbours/family friends and brought up as a member of their own family. Occasionally it was arranged through a solicitor, doctor or charitable organisation but adoption was viewed as an essentially private arrangement between the parties concerned.
