When we first discussed the idea of mapping and recording Manchester General Cemetery , we never anticipated our project being the success that it is just 18 months down the line. Our motive was purely to provide an additional resource to help fellow family historians and the project is totally voluntary. Our team members spend many hours both working in the Cemetery and transcribing and collating the information collected.
We have found information in the Cemetery that wasn’t in the public domain before, particularly with regard to the graves and memorials for local soldiers and servicemen. As many of them are not actually buried in MGC, their names do not appear in the burial registers or on the Online Burials website. They are of course commemorated on the CWGC memorials and website, but there is no indication, in many cases, that memorials exist in MGC. Their names have been added to various family memorials within the Cemetery, many of which are buried (and have been re-covered after the details have been recorded for preservation purposes) and therefore are almost impossible to locate.
It appears that other parties are using the information and presenting it as their own. As one of the principal objectives of the project is sharing information, all we ask is that if other groups do use it they at least acknowledge the work and dedication of the MGCTP volunteers.
