I would also like to THANK!!!  The two Teenage Lads who were at the Cemetery and on their own initiative were clearing and tiding the area, whilst they had to be asked to stop due to safety reasons etc., this helped, (Mr D.L,)   see that this proposal is possible.  If you can get Teenage lads to do this kind of thing it’s worth doing!!!  These Lads had help from a Local Housing Association that provided the tools  for them to clear out a nearby pond due to the bad condition it was in, and passing the Cemetery thought to do some clearing and tidying there, locals in flats rang the police thinking they were digging up graves? Needless to say we were all surprised when it became known the real reason!!

So much for the big society which encourages people to take responsibility... what lessons did those lovely teenagers learn when they tried to do something good? Surely picking up litter should be praised and encouraged not frowned upon for flouting ridiculous H&S regulations. Honestly ::) ::)

???"Locals in the flats rang the Police thinking they were digging up Graves" ???

The lads were not picking up litter, surprisingly there is hardly any, they were clearing the soil way from covered gravestones.  Some of the stones are very unsafe and are ready for falling over. Those lay flat, some  large areas could be seen underneath where the stones were, showing them resting on a couple of bricks, clearly not safe.  As we walked amongst them we tripped.

Whilst they were doing a brilliant job, you can see the point of the H&S of the Council.

Mr D.L. has said that they are willing to help in anyway possible, to clear any items that could be dangerous before we go in on the day and Officers can be there as the Police and Council work together on projects like this!!

The lads added to our cause and helped Mr D.L. see that there are Good ones out there and they are willing to help.

"this helped, (Mr D.L,) see that this proposal is possible"

Also Mr D.L. took thier names to help them out in seeing what help he could get them from the Council!!  ;D He was really impressed with them!!!   It was he himself who said "It was like 'fate!' had intervend!!!

I think its a great idea and if I'm available I'd like to help

Is it worth contacting local Schools who may have Students doing Duke of Edinburgh Award as they have to do some volunteer work to complete their award?

This is a very exciting and worthwhile project and I look forward to hearing more. With enough notice I might be able to take part (I live up in Scotland). If you need volunteers for the transcription work I can help with that. I assume that part will  be done online? Good luck.

Glad I'm not the only one with logistical problems - I'm in Malta.  But I really want to be involved.  Not even told my OH yet that I might want to go to Manchester to take photographs of gravestones - he doesn't share my enthusiasm for geneaology.

Nor mine Luzzu but he knows it's my passion and after 20+ years of serious research he's used to it. I think it's amazing that you're considering such a long journey to be part of this, good for you!

There's the added incentive of a some retail therapy and a long overdue day out in the Trafford Centre  ;D ;D ;D.

I would like to jump in here, I have a few family members in the general cemetery, and have visited in the past only to spend all my time searching for the plots.
This is a great idea, and one which I would like to be part of, I look forward to hearing more and eventually getting some work done.
Good luck and keep us posted.
